I met more than my share of wackazoid mormons. To be sure, other religions have them, too. But is it more pronounced among mormons? What do y'all think?
Any group that lets isolated people feel like they're a part of a community is going to attract the crazies. I've seen it in my religious community, in Mensa, in all sorts of volunteer organizations, from animal rescues to an association of lesbian businesswomen. A friend of mine sees it a lot in AA.
A lot of these people have mental health issues, or for some other reason have not been properly socialized, and they are very, very lonely. It's impossible to get really close to them and have any kind of genuine friendship, but at the same time, I think it's important to be kind and respectful. Like most of the rest of us, they're trying to get their needs met and probably doing the best they can.
