Or the young women who would suddenly disappear for a few months, off to live with relatives or some such thing.
Unmarried people have been f/#king and, oops, making babies for as long as there have been people -- social disapproval or not. This isn't the "new" normal. It's the old normal out of the closet.
I both agree and disagree. While sexual activity among unmarrieds has been going on since the dawn of human history, the statistical fact that women under 30 are choosing in greater numbers to have out-of-wedlock births is new. I think you are going to see leaders in all faiths, from Roman Catholicism to Protestantism to Mormonism to Islam to...whatever you choose decry the "immorality that has seized our country" (and I'll bet they use that exact phrase, too). What it appears to actually be signaling is the availability of marriage only to affluent, college-educated people.
For almost the entirety of human history, babies were born outside of wedlock. Then, for a brief period, it became the norm to be married, although there were always a sizable minority who were not. And for the last couple of centuries it has been swinging back the other way.
