If you can avoid leaving the gate area - avoid it. Tough if your luggage was checked and has been released, you have to fetch it and then try to get it through security again.
It is much safer closer to the gates. Apparently there are some evil doers who take advantage of just such situations to steal bags and other stuff from those who are stuck on the public side of security.
Start asking immediately who is distributing cots. Get one and stick with it.
If you need to call your airline to make changes, be aware that a wait for someone to answer may take up to 3 hours when lots of people are stranded. I recommend waiting on a line while being on the phone and deal with whoever can help you first. (unless you have obtained a cot!)
I learned all these useful things during a 72 hour stay at JFK. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had! But, it makes a great story - enjoy your adventure friend!

Sounds like great advice. I am still hoping I can get out of here tonight. Currently sitting at the gate with our plane diverted to Colorado to refuel and then come back and pick us up. So far only 2 hours delayed.
Is this storm just in the SLC area or down south too? My convert daughter is going up to southern Utah In less than 20 hrs. Oh dear....and they have a baby in toe.
I slept in the Atlanta airport once. I was flying from Rome to SLC and missed the last connecting flight by minutes. It really wasn't that bad. I got a pillow and blanket from airport people and pulled two chairs together and it made a tolerable bed. Good luck.
