First, even though the Church has said they will not accept payment of tithing on gambling winnings, including the lottery, who wants to bet that they would change their tune if this ever really did happen. A member wins a hundred million off a Powerball ticket that he bought in a moment of weakness, or received as a Christmas gift, (I'm from the south, people give lottery tickets as presents) and how much you want to bet the church says he needs to pay tithing on it as part of the process of repentance. I mean, imagine all the malls they could build.

Second, tithing is semi-private. Of course you have tithing settlement at the end of the year, but you hand the Bishop a check for eight million dollars, he isn't supposed to ask where the money came from, only if it is a full and honest tithe. How the hell do they enforce a rule like that?

Third, how is not being allowed to pay tithing a punishment? What world do the GAs live on that they think that is a deterrent to anything?

They accept tithing in the form of stocks (see Romney) who's value is a gamble.

The accept tithing in the form of proceeds from investments - which are a gamble.

The Church invests tithing into things like property and land, gambling that it won't lose them money.

There are Mormon's working in casino's who's salary is paid out of the proceeds of gambling. They accept tithing on the salaries of these people.

...lottery tickets.

"Here, bishop, use your faith and priesthood power to change these into winning numbers."

I've been racking my brains about why they create rules that stop members from paying tithing/being full members.

Examples: Lottery winnings, homosexual couples, having liberal views on doctrine...

And I realized something the otherday.

Conservatives are far more obedient to ecclesiastical authority than liberals. Members who stay members and win the lottery, are in a gay couple or will have independent doctrinal views are a small, tiny minority.

It is better to rally the conservative sheeple and excite them to obey than to broaden the tent and demotivate/dilute the sheeple.

Hah, I have a ticket for the 120 million powerball tonight. I know I am going to win, because I have a good feeling, and I was taught I should trust in that.

If somebody is lucky enough to win the lottery, it must be because it is God's will. If God wants you to have the money, the church has no reason to take any of it away.

Get thee on over to a mormon mommy forum and you'll see why not allowing someone to pay tithing is a punishment. There are a whoooole bunch of people who seriously honestly believe that tithing brings blessings, and if you fail to tithe fully, those blessings should and will be withheld. There are women who are worried about how to feed their toddler who are forking over 10% to the church so that their blessings aren't withheld. Apparently being able to feed their toddler isn't a blessing god sees as worthwhile. Nice god they have, huh?

Donated investments are liquidated on receipt, there is no real benefit to any charity to hold on to donated investments because of the possibility that they might lose value. The real benefit of donating investments is to the one donating it. They receive 100% of the value as a deduction and if it made money they do not pay the cap gains, that is a very attractive tax benefit.

As pointed out Mitt didn't donate any stock in the last few years. The most likely reason for this is that he didn't have anything that would have caused a cap gain tax, thus no reason to donate stock.

Of course the blood sucking corporation disguised as a church does invest in stock but that is only after they have washed and anointed the money to not be part of the tithing fund, after that they can invest with a clean conscience since there is a chance that they will lose some of it.
