"David Archuleta Takes Two-Year Break From Music To Go On Mormon Mission"

He claims nobody pushed or pressured him to go. Yeah, right! Anyo male in the Mormon church is browbeaten into believing that they must serve a mission.

I can't believe how people scream for these Idol contestants, so few of whom have any star quality to begin with. Carrie Underwood and *maybe* Adam Lambert, if the producers had been unafraid of the conservative idiot faction and given him a chance to show it.

Star quality! This is why it's hard to become a star--or I should say it used to be--because you had to have "it," that charisma, that thing that makes people want to look at you, in addition to the sound that comes out of your mouth and the ability to modulate the sound in a captivating way. Most of the Idol contestants don't even have two out of three.

Not that I don't get why people enjoy Idol. I do get that. But honestly, most of the contestants are totally average, other than their voices.

Other than his voice, David Archuleta is a totally average Mormon kid (who, incidentally, appears to be fighting teh gay). I suppose I'd cry, too, if I had to leave the (unwarranted) screaming and do two years in zombie weirdo freak prison.

because the crutch thinks Europe needs a shot in the arm. Who the heck is David Archuletta anyway?

Wherever he goes (and it probably won't be a third-world country) maybe he's about to find that out - bless his little cotton socks.

Briggy, remember when you posted the Britain's Got Talent folks? (I think it was the darling toothless girl and Paul Potts?) DA is one of the same sorts, just the American version.

BTW, are you cooking a drunken Christmas cake and a goose?

I wish I was super rich on my mission. I would have gotten a boat and driven off into Lake Michigan with some trashy girls.

I wonder where the would send him - I am sure it won't be full of inspiration like when they sent me to Wisconsin.

He needs to go somewhere they dont have TV's or American Idol, like Zambia. Then when he comes back and turns into an exmormon he can be in the Book of Mormon musical in 2015.

Well, I guess the girl/guy ratio is about to be even more off kilter.

I foresee a whole lot of teenage girls getting baptized.

A commentator in the SLTrib mentioned that his record label had recently dropped him and that after his first two albums, he wasn't getting much play anymore. A couple of years ago he was saying that his music and the exposure he was giving the church was kind of like his "mission." Sure, if he sings with the Mo-Tab choir etc, he gets lots of attention, but otherwise, he's pretty much been forgotten. So, this mission seems like the next logical step for him so he can come back and be a mormon artist....he will get that audience like lots of other mormon artists and the RM status will give him some LDS cred.

His career wasn't going anywhere, so he will probably become SO yesterday's news in two years. The idolizers will have moved on to the next shiny thing.

Or maybe he'll return and take a turn in the lead role of the BoM musical.

exmogal, what is up with his hair??? Saw him on a show and thought "The Mormon prophet approves of that?" Seems a bit out there. Will he be told how to wear it at MTC? That kid even looks different in the face now. And what a waste - he will have a miserable time those two yrs.

That being said, it doesn't seem particularly out there in length. He'll probably need to get it cut by much.

Here's a link to their grooming standards: http://www.mtc.byu.edu/doc/elders.pdf

Interestingly, the elder standing in the middle looks like one I knew here in the DC area, and I have to wonder if it's he.

Back when I served the church's pic of the missionary haircut look was modeled by a blonde missionary. God's favorite prophet was an All-American blue-eyed blonde from the Acient Bibical era of 1823 in the Holy Land of Rochester, New York. Now what I see are an Asian, African, and a dark-haired white guy. God's army must be changing its stripes to fit in better with those of Asian and African descent. IMO that's a good savvy business strategy that might work to help get more people dunked and create more tithing inflows.

He actually has loyal fans of all religions and the loyal ones will be waiting. I like his voice and he's a really nice guy. And I appreciate that he doesn't put on a star act - he's just himself and he does music he wants to do, not what somebody says will sell.

I think they'll send him to somewhere in Central or South America where Spanish is spoken. He already knows the language, and that area is (from what I've read on here) a place where missionaries tend to baptize MANY investigators. That will for sure help him stay active and believing. If he gets sent to Europe and doesn't baptize anyone, he might start feeling resentful towards TSCC for pressuring him to step away from his singing career for nothing. When he comes back, the only people who MIGHT remember him are mormons, but even a lot of them don't care for his music that much.

Personally, I think his voice is amazing. It's a shame that he's a mormon, because he doesn't have much of a personality (at least, not that he shows) and it's probably because TSCC never let him grow as a person.
