I don't go anymore but I thought I would go last week to visit my best friend. I had 4 of her little sisters stood with me, and the missionary couple in the ward came to talk with me. The sister asked "are these your children?" (I'm 18, clearly not old enough to have an 8 year old child)
I thought it was hilarious so I said gosh no!!! Then proceeded to laugh. She then gave me the most horrible look and said shhhhh!!!!!
How ridiculous? Shouldn't churches be happy places, filled with laughter?

I got shusshed a lot. It's a good thing.
Once I got shushed when I was helping my husbands ex wife figure out where the waiting room was in the temple. She was a nevermo that was there while her son was getting married. My heart broke for her. I thought about giving her my recommend, but don't think my husband could have handled it.

Got shushed again when I told the bishop he was asking me to deny Christ. (long story) I looked him in the eye and told him to never even think about shusshing me again.

Come to think of it....the mo church is the ONLY place I have ever experienced this.

Was it in Sacrament meeting? Our sacrament meetings would normally start out so noisy that they resembled a football crowd. lol

The Bishop or his councellors were always tapping on the microphone and having to tell everyone to shut up and show reverence.

Mormons make a pledge in the temple to avoid loud laughter. Why, I have no idea.

It's so you won't laugh at all the embarrassing clothes you are wearing while you make that pledge.

She blundered, blamed you for it, and told you to hush to cover her mistake.

Mormons like to blame others for their own behavior.

We got kicked out of the foyer area in the Bountiful temple waiting for my DH's sister to get married. My DH's family is kind of loud by nature but they honestly weren't being loud that day. Apparently it was too loud for the temple workers. They kept giving us dirty looks and then escorted us downstairs so we weren't in the main foyer anymore.

I almost got the Bishop's daughter to go on a date with me to go see the second Austin Power's movie. She loved the first one, but her father found out about them, and they sat down, had a talk, and agreed with were not appropriate viewing. God, I was in love with her, and it was the closest I ever got her to go out on a date with me. I was a nerd (back when it was still a bad thing) and she was one of the cool kids.

I promised

Shuffling along in frumpy white skirts,
Shushing, shushing, down the aisle.
The unknown covenants to a life of hurts.
shush, shush, shuffle, shush, shush.

Tie your bow neatly, then bow your head.
Do as your told, and shush, shush, shush.
Honor, obey, til your heart turns to lead.
Cover your face, and shush, shush, shush.

They called it a wedding, and I was the bride.
Shushing, shushing, shushing, shush.
Hands reaching toward God as if to confide
That was the day I shushed up and died.

Swathed in white silk, like a cocoon.
Keeping dead covenants, shush shush.
I rock my baby and stare at the moon
She cries and I shush her shushhh.

No, poetry!

God hates creative writing unless he's the star! Not you!

Thank you for the nice compliments. I don't usually write poetry. Sometimes something might trigger a binge. I've been shushed to death in that church, had to let it out I guess.

Cause if you had, you'd be used to old ladies saying "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH." And grabbing you by the arm to make sure you behave. Well, okay, they discontinued these abusive practices at the time they changed the death penalties in the 90's and tried to create a kinder gentler temple experience. But still, many of us remember those old hags chastising us before we had done anything out of order.

God yes, I had one of those hags pounce on me because I *gasp* TOOK OFF MY VEIL WHILE I WAS STILL IN THE CELESTIAL ROOM. I was heading for the exit and I was 'done', so I took it off. BIG EFFIN' MISTAKE. Apparently Mormon Jesus gets pissed when you do that; fortunately one of his nags was there to hiss at me so I slapped it back on. I felt a burning in my bosom right about then, I tell ya ;)

Mia, that is a lovely poem. Thank you much for sharing it; it really resonates deeply with me, and I'm sure many others. I wrote quite a bit of poetry myself when I was struggling with personal issues; it was my therapy and while I didn't write anything specifically Mormon related, much of my unhappiness was tied into my Mormon identity, which of course isn't who I am at all. Reading your poem brought it back full force; so glad I'm not living that lie anymore!

i thought the Temples were the "sacred edifices" not the "meeting house" i ask because one might expect a shh in a Temple...but not a meeting house after the "meeting" was over...anybody clear that up for me please? :)

They tell children, "You must be quiet and reverent. You're in the house of the lord."

You are right about temples. Mormons worship them much more because god and Jesus walk and talk there with GAs and the temples attract all of the special spirits who are dunked and processed there by proxies. To mormons, Temples are like extensions of the CK on earth.
