I'm sure lots of you know this but many immigrants to the US had no choice....

as they were shipped over there as white slaves from England. The slightest excuse to up the numbers of slave workers to build America, Australia and other penal colonies in the colonial lands of the time.

Brigham Young stole this idea too.

I've thought about this a lot....

Why would all those people from Europe convert to the church and leave everything to join some handcart trek? It's very sad to think some of them weren't leaving much behind and were taking the only shot they saw available. I'm sure some of them made out OK but it's really sad to think what most of them found here.

They were duped. They were told they'd be travelling in covered wagons...

with teams of oxen and the protection of the church elders.

They sold their farms and/or personal possessions to pay for the journey and headed out full of hope and burning bosoms.

Sick isn't it?
