http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/11/american-exorcist-plies-h_n_782516.html

From the article:

"U.S. Catholic bishops are sponsoring a conference this week (Nov. 12-13) in Baltimore on the "liturgical and pastoral practice of exorcism." Fifty-six bishops and 66 priests have registered to hear about the shortage of trained exorcists and the growing interest in the mysterious rite, according to Catholic News Service."

Apparently there are still some Catholics who take this crap seriously. Just a little tidbit to help put the amateur Mormons in perspective. The Mormon version of Satan is boring compared to the Catholic one.

See you in Baltimore!

I love that flick. Its the ultimate taunt-fest!

I pull that on my techs when they screw-up just to let 'em know its not that serious, then follow-up with "Oh, and I'm laughing at the superior intellect."

Thanks for the chuckle!

Thanks for posting this link! To put that out in the national press and then not think that we will all go, "Like, CULT?" is amazing. Just nutty thinking we will rationally go "Oh, yah. The Catholics needs more guys with the discernment to determine if individuals in their congregations are posessed by EVIIIILL. Go, them." And then we all move on.

Not.

These pedophiles are gonna be the guys that are going to pounce on people to expel the evil spirits??? And we trust this?

Geez. (To paraphrase.)

The mormons are plenty strange but the skirted catholic guys got it all over them. Crazy cult.

to train their clergy to be able to separate the garden-variety nutcase to somebody who might "really" be "possessed."

I worked in a military hospital back when the original version of "The Exorcist" came out, and the power of suggestion was incredible. You would not believe the number of cases of self-diagnosed "demonic possession" we saw in people going through basic training. (I guess Boot Camp really is Hell.)

Whether or not WE believe that Satan or possession are real isn't material here. THEY believe in it, and given the nature of the belief, are trying to deal with it as best they can.

They furnish more training than Mormon clergy gets. I'd bet my old garmies on that, if I still had them.

That is the way I took it and, no, I don't believe in possesssion. It is very very rarely used in the US and even though I have atteneded a Catholic church I have never heard of a case or evven heard it mentioned except as a joke.
