Recent events impacting students at the University of Utah; elimination of TSCC sponsored sorority and fraternity; another chapter in eliminating the "fun factor" from church activities/membership and increasing control of the Supreme Soviet.

Of course, BYU "social units" (men's/women's clubs) were banned years ago; social units had morfed from the more traditional previous sororities/fraternities which had been at the Y for years.

Samuel Hall Society was a mens club formed to extend the Goldbrickers traditions when "social units" were formed in the 1960's at BYU, and maintained many of the previous Bricker traditions.

Of course, Bricker alums include G.A.'s Loren C. Dunn, and Dallin Oaks, among others. Many remember David Bednar when he rushed Samuel Hall Society as a pledge ("zero Bednar") and participated along with the other "zeros" in twice a day musters, making paddles, etc. And, yes, Dave was paddled in to the club, just like everyone else.

Good for them then, but eliminated now.

Any Brickers/SHS alums out there for a shout out?

Bednar rushed (and joined) early/mid 80's; I knew his "little brother" and also people from his pledge class.

Would that be Master Bill Erb? And possibly Master Barry Brown?

The church has taken away a source of some of the best memories of college life...first at the Y and now the U.

At the Y, people started going to their Stake Presidents and tattled about rush...which eventually led to all being kicked off campus.

Any good memories?

Sooooooooo many good memories. BYU isn't the best place to get an education, but a great place to blow your parent's money. So what year did you rush, Zero "Burnham"?

BTW - Bednar is 11 years older than me, so he must have rushed in the early 70's.

Hey guys! So I'm going to be attending BYU this summer! My Dad was an old Sam Hall guy and he always tells us the best most ridiculous stories. He breaks out the paddle every now and then to show us. But from what I've been able to scrounge up, Social clubs are pretty much dead at BYU even off campus. I'm going to start up an effort this year, and really push for it when I return from my mission to get Sam Hall going. Probably off campus cuz i dont want to deal with all the BYU rules. But anyways I want to know if any of you guys know where I can find a History of Sam Hall or what the main traditions were or notable members? All of this stuff would make it a lot easier for me to restart vs starting from scratch.
My Dad's name was John Peterson if that rings a bell.

I rushed and became a Sportswomen in 1980 and tell stories to my kids about musters and our "double standard" parties. Ah, those SW visors (my pledge class had to wear them upside down) and Vauknom pink socks :-) Does anyone know if these "service" clubs were ever affiliated with any national fraternal (sorority) organizations?

My ex-husband (yep got the MRS degree) was a "Sportsman" (and BYU Varsity athlete). When he rushed in 1976 the pledges had to go to Salt Lake City and interview hookers.

I rushed Sam Hall in '81. Had many friends in Sportswomen, trying to remember names. Kim Brown I believe rushed Sportswomen in '81.

Sam Hall had some great line-ups with Sportswomen!

Sportsmen were always a little on the edge! Or at least, we in Sam Hall used to think so....

I was golfing last weekend--two of the three others were men I met in Sam Hall many moons ago---we've stayed in touch for decades.

I don't believe the women's clubs were ever affiliated with any classic latin sororities---the men's clubs weren't either. The all were reclassified "social units" and then banned altogether...

Last time I saw him was just after i had come-out in the late 80's. He was managing a supermarket in Santa Barbara and married to a TBM. They gave me all sorts of attitude and pretended that they didn't even recognize me because i had changed soooo much. I found it hilarious, but not surprising since they hadn't changed AT ALL since they first started dating. I didn't see any reason to keep in touch after that. Post-cult(1988) I quickly found it difficult to maintain relationships with morg cultists. The reason is self explanatory.

There were a few people that I think may have been Sam Hall such as John Holley, Collin Perkins. Don't remember other names right now...

Good to hear from you, bobofitz--and glad to hear you're keeping up the Bricker associations---yes, some of the best times were had with other Sam Hallers "back in the day"---it made the Y"somewhat" bearable, no doubt.

All gone now of course due to the "wisdom" of the SLC hierarchy....

Every now and then I Google Samuel Hall to see what pops up. To my surprise I found this. Big shout out to all my Bricker Brothers. I still keep in touch with many of them and consider it all the best time of my life!!! Sad that BYU could not keep them but also understand why.....don't agree with it but its saved me a lot of money over the years. Do I donate to BYU, only if I can write my check out to Sam Hall. I now live in Provo and have tried to track down all our old stuff. Sadly, Betty Scuba has it and she won't give it back. She's still mad that Erb took her virginity!!

Sam hall- l972. I was wondering if any body from there was still out there. Mike young was our prsident then. Great times- other than my honeymoon best time I ever had. Anybody know what happened to Robert "Flash" Romney. Bruce Fisher was in there at that time also-- Harrison Horn-Bill Bodily.

Which was formed right before I rushed, as a sister sorority to Sigma Chi. Only it never really caught on and was super small. We couldn't compete with the more established sororities like Delta (which was primarily an East Coast crowd) and another that was all Orange County girls. I can't remember their name right off hand because it never interested me to rush. I want to say Kappa. One of their requirements was to tell how much your father made - way too tacky. Sigma Chi always paired up with one of them because there was more variety. Sportswomen were out by the time I arrived at BYU but Sam Hall was still a big deal.

Hell...I think the Sam Hallers were afraid of the Norsemen...

Master Erb surfaces? What a treat---and a reminder of the brotherhood that was Samuel Hall---and the fraternity of all the social clubs, male/female, which have now been eliminated by the powers that be.

Yep, Bill.....you were involved for sure--many of us sacrificed a few good grades for participating--but the investment was well worth it--as you point out.

I rushed Sam Hall in fall of 67. Member 'till I graduated in 70. Inactive RM then, exmo now. Mostly a lurker..first time to write to RFM. Don't forget...." We'll build a bungalow.....big enough for two".Good fun...good parties. I still have lots of old friends from Sam Hall. BYU seems to be unbearable for people like me now. Good thing it wasn't like that then or I'd have been off to Viet Nam after getting kicked out of school.

My brother was Samuel Hall, and his best friend invented the character of Samuel Hall, and wrote a complete history of the man. Samuel Hall was rather like Forest Gump--in the center of all the great historical events of his time. I wonder if that paper is still around....

The social units were banned, by the time I got to BYU, and I felt that ward groups could never replace social units. I was on the ski team (just for the skiing) and the tennis team (my true passion) and made some great friends there. In a university as large as BYU, smaller groups are a necessity.

My father and uncle were Brickers. They built a cabin in Brickerhaven, in Sundance, which has been a nice perk for the family!
