Recently, a man in British Columbia was attacked and killed by a she-bear as he had unfortunately wandered too close to her cubs and her killer instinct reared up.

Usually when an animal kills a human it's game over for it as the wildlife specialists show up with their hunting rifles. In some cases, the young are also killed, depending on circumstances.

In this case, authorities decreed that the mother bear was doing what mother bears do, protecting her young, and so she was not given a death sentence. You can't lightly kill a bear just for being a bear.

The incident reminded me of Carolyn Jessop's statement in her book "Escape" about FLDS women. She said "there is no mother bear there", meaning that contrary to the usual motherly instinct to protect one's young at all costs, even the loss of one's own life, FLDS women stand by and submit to the male demands for ever more young females. Carolyn got out because she didn't want that life for her children, as did Debbie Palmer and scores of other women brought up in FLDS compounds in the USA and Canada. While they may have been trained (i.e., brutalized) to submit themselves to the demands of the FLDS "priesthood", they could not stomach the same fate for their own children and it gave them resolve and courage to get out any way they could, to protect the kids.

Too, fathers and brothers transport their pre- or newly pubescent female children across the US/Canada border and offer them up to the likes of Warren Jeffs and other male leaders. They have even less of the protective instinct towards their own offspring and relatives.

Who do children have to turn to if even their own parents won't act to save them from pedophiles but instead hand them over and maybe even participate in subsequent events (such as rape)?

Strangers donate body parts so that children unknown to them may live. Passersby intervene if a child they don't know is seen to be in harm's way.

Many ask how the FLDS adults could stand by - or even participate - while Jeffs et al raped young girls.

Carolyn's statement sums it up for me - there is no mother bear there. The women have lost their instinct to protect their young.

Contemplating how that could be is truly frightening.
