Oaks was president at BYU when they shocked mens' genitals to "cure" them of homosexual thoughts. Pretty disturbing stuff. Of course, he probably put it on his resume as a badge of honor. He is one evil man.

I was there when he was doing that at BYU. My sincerest hope is that when Oaks finally croaks he getS the Monson treatment in the New York Times and he gets full credit for the Electroshock Therapy along with all the other ugliness of his life.

has anyone ever successfully sued these "conversion therapy" places??? I'm seeing a similar abuse going on today with men frequently being labeled "sex addicts" and put through similarly abusive "therapy". How are these places still around???

As long as religion is around these places will be around.

All religious people wouldn't do it, but there are plenty out there who are only using religion as a justification for their own bigotry and ignorance. The states were beginning to pass laws against it, but that is changing again under the recent climate in the country.

I predict that when Nelson croaks, Oaks will be president with Bednar as 1st counselor.

BYU didn't apply electroshock to anyone's genitals.

The protocol for BYU's "aversion therapy" program was for a
plethysmograph (device for measuring volume change of a body
part) to be attached to the penis of the subject and then
electroshock was applied to a DIFFERENT part of the body in
response to arousal. The fact that a device was attached to the
genitals and that electroshock was also administered has been
interpreted by some to mean that the shock was applied to the
genitals. It wasn't.

My (jack)Mormon neighbor did aversion therapy to quit smoking. I remember going with her and a bunch of us kids to one of her sessions. They wrapped the shockers around the fingers and then gave a shock when the person went to smoke.

We kids tried it out on the lowest level for fun. I am sure that people today would not be willing to let kids play with this, but this happened back in the 70's.

I have to wonder if the aversion therapy place was Mormon run or affiliated and if they also were torturing gay people in between the smokers.

Memories...

So something that was popular in the 70s no longer is around.
Could it be because it didn't work?

Interestingly so-called "aversion therapy" is based on
behavioral psychology that basically says we are creatures that
react to stimuli--our behavior is "conditioned" based on what
rewards and punishments we've experienced. This view of human
beings is totally the opposite of the Morg's view that we are
these "intelligences." and "gods in embryo" who have been given
"free agency" . . . oops, make that "agency" and that our
spiritual side is what is foremost.

Yet they are the ones who were just fine about trying to "cure"
someone's "spiritual problem" with behavioral psychology. I get
the impression that Mormons don't believe in the basics of
Mormonism except maybe on Sunday or during FHE.

Just goes to show that all they care about is outward obedience,
and not any inner "life of the spirit."

Just goes to show you that being smart enough to pass the bar and be a lawyer, does not mean you are smart enough to not get involved in such crazy stuff.
