My wife will be both happy and sad. She likes Oaks for some unfathomable reason, so his elevation will please her; and loves Uchtdorf, so his demotion(?) will sadden her.
With Nelson putting Oaks as first counselor, it's obvious he wants to move the morg in a more conservative and hardline direction. Personally, I can't stand Oaks. He's a mean spirited and cold hearted asshole!
Sadly the homophobia will only increase with Oaks. I wonder if Oaks will bring back shocking testicles in the name of Jesus like he did when he was president of BYU.

Is this Wiki report about Moyle accurate ? "Moyle was ordained an apostle and member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on April 10, 1947. Moyle served as Second Counselor in the First Presidency to church president David O. McKay from June 12, 1959, to October 12, 1961, when he was called as First Counselor. He was First Counselor in the First Presidency until his death."
And this about Hugh B Brown
"After McKay died on January 18, 1970, Brown was not retained as a counselor in the First Presidency by new church president Joseph Fielding Smith. Never before in the twentieth century had a new president of the church not called a surviving member of the previous First Presidency as a counselor. This unusual move was possibly due to Brown's support for allowing blacks to have the right to the priesthood and the fact that Brown had questioned if Smith should be appointed president due to his advanced age and poor health.[9] Brown returned as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, where he remained until his death."
They didn't stop being a member of the 12 and serving there? Like I said, Dieter stays in SLC as a member of the 12.
My uncle told me this AM that Uchtdorf is perceived well by the youth. They need him to focus on trying to stop the hemoraging in that age group.
I don't even know the new guys as I haven't been to or followed the church for over 35 years. My family is still active and temple recommend holders, so today I asked his opinion. But who knows. I agree that the 3 guys now in charge all look like the hard line type. Not good for keeping or reversing the loss of young members. All 3 of his offspring left the church in their 20's.
I was overthinking this a bit and since this "apostolic interregnum" had lasted MUCH longer than other recent ones, I thought maybe the 93 year old Nelson would make the bold decision to skip over some of the old crusties and select a sucessor from the twelve much younger, and break the increasing fossilization happening in the church.
Nope. Not even a sliver of inspiration in the new FP. I mean, at least Uchtdorf on Monson's part showed a bit of creative thinking.
The way I see it, Oaks is now in charge. Nelson and Eyring will soon be full-time in the nursing home. Nelson might languish for a few years before hieing to Kolob, but his presidency is over before it started.
That sounds about right. It sounds like what Tom Phillips predicted.
I have great difficulty with Oaks's ascent. Anyone associated with the torture of human beings, let alone entirely innocent ones, is appalling; and yet here is the church raising that man into the presidency. I know there is no accountability for senior church bureaucrats, but sooner or later this is going to become a public relations disaster.
Oaks is guilty of permitting, at the very least, torture. He has engaged in, and refused to apologize for, purely evil practices.
Actually I see that as a bad thing. When they die, TSCC will make some progression into the 20th century. That will allow some members who are on the fence to keep paying their tithe with hope that maybe the 21st century is that light they see at the end of the tunnel.
Oaks - better to have that guy as your first counselor than as the president of the Qof12. He's a hardline principle type of a guy (former judge). Ballard is a former business guy - way easier cut a deal with as pres of the Qof12. Maybe Nelson can get some reforms done with this cast. Eyring - tradition to keep at least one. Uchtdorf's plane got grounded. Keep an eye out for him in the pilot's lounge. In the church, with counselors, it's basically, "before I tell you what I've decided, I'm going to give you a chance to tell me what you think so that you feel like you've had a chance to participate. Are you done speaking? OK, here is what I've decided. Thanks for being such a good, supportive counselor."
Meh. I don't see it as so mysterious. Nelson probably knows that at his age he could drop any moment so having Oaks - who is next in line - in the FP probably just seems more like a way to keep the next transition smooth.
Now as for keeping Eyring and dumping Dieter - there is some palace intrigue.
Dieter is a maverick and Nelson is very conservative. Monson liked Dieter a lot, which is why he was there. Nelson isn't as fond of him, hence the demotion to "Elder"".
Of course, this is speculation, but it would seem to me that they would assign another set of "apostles" to learn the ropes of the current FP counselors. This protocol may already be in place for predictable transitions. I think we know very little of all the comings and goings of the massive bureaucracy.
