What do mishies know before they arrive in the field? Such as:

Long work hours
Passports may or may not be confiscated
Rules about calling home
Rules about ratting on rule breaking of companion mishies
etc. etc.

Do they sign an agreement to follow rules at any time? What does this agreement say if it exists?

"The White Bible"

It didn't exist when I was out...

I think the broad general outline is well known. Many kids have siblings or friends or neighbors that went on missions.

I don't think they are aware of how those rules effect them.

No unsupervised/uncensored contact with family and loved ones.

The depravation of living in poverty. Constantly hungry. Substandard housing.

Limited mobility.

Constant pressure.

Lying to parents.

Some of the things you mention (passport confiscation, for example) are less "rules" and more whims of the local mission leadership.

As they pray about it on the first night in the field.

It's something they learn as they go.

Rules? Like no music, no reality, no fun...? Day one.

Back when I went (1979), there were "hints" about such rules while in the MTC. But nothing explicit.

We got the full rules rundown upon arriving at the mission home. Listing the rules, and the consequences for breaking them, was item #1 on the agenda.
