Attacking someone's religion like that is a hate crime. Would you think any differently if they attacked a synagogue?

I agree, it is a hate crime. It's the same as attacking a synagogue, or a predominately Black church for example.

I read it more as, "bored teenager whose frontal lobe has not completely developed."

That could be a mitigating factor in sentencing, but the crime has to be investigated and prosecuted based upon the statutory elements of the crime.

Except in Massachusetts, of course.

How come prop 8 wasn't investigated as a hate crime ?

'The MORMON CHURCH is Dead' is what it was meant to say but TMC said IT was God so the youth were confused/ brainwashed/ mislead.

I see it this way......

Writing 'god is dead" on a temple is not actually a threat against mormons or a projection of hate on them, but it is vandalism. They attacked the temple, not the mormons.

If they wrote 'I'm gonna kill the mormons' that would be a threat, made out of hate, as well as vandalism. They threatened to attack mormons and they attacked the temple too.
