The guy's a headcase, period. Years ago when I was first sobering up I attended a group of some of these New Age sorts... They represent, IMO, the phenomenon of "reaction formation" in response to the cognitive dissonance and trauma in events in one's life.

I suffered similarly, and my experience gave me a bit of "cabdriver wisdom":
