Yes, So. Calif. has fires (due to being a dry area, and being dependent on water being brought to it from its above states).

Another charm of Calif. are earthquakes. The really "BIG" one has been predicted and overdue for decades (so the scientist warn us).

The last one of any significance did real damage to some areas, but (fortunately, for us), all that happened was a bottle of catsup fell off a shelf. (It didn't break.) And some neighbors' brick yard walls crumbled.

You want to rock and role periodically without actually dancing? Move to So. California.

But all that doesn't keep people for flooding into the Sunshine State to live (and get away from the snow months elsewhere), and also, it does offer jobs (another appeal).

And, for such as you and I (on RfM), we aren't as controlled by SLC Mormonism.

What more can you want?

I lived in both scenarios. I'd risk the threat of earthquakes and fires for not having to live under the religious theocracy that is Utah.

I'm with you stillanon. The first time I visited Utah,

to attend my cousings missionary farewell, I got a bad

taste of culture shock. God only knows how I'd handle

having to live there. Yikes , I don't know how the

mormons who live there stand it.

Horrors---my TV wouldn't work. I think the cable TV electric lines have been adversely effected somewhere in my neighborhood. (The pole which handles these is in my backyard.)

Geez, I leave my home state for a few days (been in NY since Sunday), and it all goes to hell! Fires, earthquakes (a swarm of 8, one of them 4.0, about 15 miles from my house overnight freaked out my wife)...

According to Wikipedia, the San Andres fault has a slip rate of about 1" per year.

It's about 2,000 miles from San Francisco to Anchorage. So at 1"/year, California and Alaska (mid points) will meet in about 126 million years, I guess that could be said to be in no time at all.

You forgot about North Korean nukes. They say with a nuclear load he can hit the west coast, but not the rest of the country yet.

I think I'd take any of the other 55 options in the US though I guess it is 52 if I skip Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

My heart goes out to those who've lost everything in the housefires. All tangible memories wiped out from the fires.

It's hard to imagine losing everything you own in one fell swoop.

LA is mostly a crime ridden polluted crap hole . Sure ther are nice areas for the wealthy but I would never return there .80 degree days in January are not enough of a benefit to outweigh what I don't like about the City of the Angels.

That's why Albert Hammond wrote the song ("It Never Rains In Southern California")...to give voice to those who tried, and who feel (in general), "this" way...

...which actually includes my sister---Los Angeles born and raised---for reasons I have NEVER understood.

We were both born in the same hospital, raised by the same parents, and by the same extended family, in the same wonderful corner of the same, also wonderful, larger community (the San Fernando Valley), and we had (almost completely) identical experiences growing up...

...and, even as a born Angelino, she really does NOT like either Southern California or the Valley.

On the other hand, from MY perspective, the varied American places she feels best in---the places that fit HER personal definition of "this is home"---just leave me shaking my head in confused bewilderment.

Different strokes for different folks...

Rocklin, the town of bedrock, is my home now. North California has the best winters. I wore shorts to the grocery store three days ago. It's sixty degrees at two p.m. This town used to be a quarry town, as it sits on a giant deposit of granite. That's why earthquakes are so rare and weak here. Over time the land values rose, and the quarries closed and were re-purposed as regional parks. I've been living here twenty years, and we've had no floods, two tiny earthquakes I could barely feel, no fires, no tornadoes, no blizzards, no hurricanes, some drought and long, long summers every year.

How are the fishing and the golfing?

Golfing is superb. Fishing requires a drive. Two forks of the American River feed nearby Folsom Lake. People fish the lake and the rivers.

California wouldn't be burning if those damn bums didn't start the fire. Damages is in the $$ Millions.
