I think more accurately, they hated and distrusted the Soviets more than the Germans.

So they picked the side that would keep the Soviets out of their country.

...then they fought the Germans at the end of the war.
It was complicated...

They allied with the nazi's out of self preservation initially. Finland broke off from Russia during the Russian revolution and declared independence in 1917. When Russia attacked Finland in the early days of WWII, US made weapons America gave to the Russians to fight Germany were used to invade Finland. My mother lived in Viipuri Finland which was taken over by the Russians. Finland lost 1/3 of its land. My mother was on the last train out of Viipuri. She was a young girl then and now in her 80's she still has nightmares about the Russians bombing the city.

Apparently the German-Finnish love affair was based solely on a mutual dislike of the Soviet Union. Finnish troops ended up fighting against German soldiers after the siege of Leningrad was broken.

Of course the above is only to be given whatever credit one gives to Wikipedia...

I have lovely Finnish friends (Kirsti and Juhha-Pekka) who sometimes come to visit. One day, when I'm retired probably, I'll visit them ;-)
