I was struck by the similarities between this photo and the church's fantasy PR images of Joseph Smith.

Well, sure, but...

Copland produced actually useful stuff (both "inspiring" and commercially successful music). And didn't demand his followers give him their daughters or 10% of their income.

I think the idea of the lone "inspired" person toiling away by candlelight is much older than either Smith or Copland....for example, this image by ter Brugghen, circa 1627:
