Fundamentalist Mormons usually come to mind first -- and that was the most popular comment

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/roy-moore-evangelicalism_us_5a05f4f8e4b0e37d2f37573d?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

And its's not just him -- just like the FLDS, there's an evangelical movement that tries to normalise this behaviour:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2017/11/14/fundamentalist_homeschoolers_are_one_group_of_roy_moore_allies_who_think.html

"Moore has an even deeper relationship with Doug Phillips, a disgraced leader in the “Biblical patriarchy” movement. Phillips was president of Vision Forum, a Texas-based organization devoted to the “restoration of the Christian household.” In Phillips’ world, men ought to be self-sufficient by the time they marry, but women live under their father’s authority until they marry. Ideally, in fact, a woman would live under her father’s literal roof until her wedding day. Phillips promoted the concept of “stay-at-home daughters,” in which girls live at home until they marry, often forgoing formal education and focusing on homemaking skills. Independence is essentially a flaw in a Christian wife, who, Phillips taught, should be willing to call her husband “Lord."

It appears that Roy Moore wants it both ways.

He wants to have one foot in the evangelical world, where older men can court and marry teenage girls.

He also wants to have a foot in the unbelieving world, where premarital sex is OK.

Apparently, he's a hypocrite who doesn't believe in the religious stuff but uses it to gain political traction in a heavily evangelical state.

Shame on you, Roy.

The last woman coming forward was sad/poignant, but had its funny moments.

She says what he did.
He denies ever knowing her.
She pulls out her high school yearbook, and shows where he signed it with a personal (and flattering) note, including "DA" at the end of it.

That's called getting caught lying :)

He now says he didn't sign the book. I guess he's saying it's a forgery?

Just need someone who worked at the Old Hickory House restaurant at the time who can corroborate he went in there--apparently he frequented the place as he began grabbing the 16 year old's hair when she was 15.

Moore was NOT yet a D.A. at that time......and age of consent was 14 until about 2004.

Wrong on both scores.

In 1979 Roy Moore was a Deputy District Attorney. Deputy DAs are often called DAs in court and in public. If a deputy wanted to impress people, he could describe himself in those terms without raising many eyebrows--especially among little girls who didn't know any better.

Meanwhile the legal age of consent in Alabama in 1979 was, as it is now, 16. Sexual contact with a child from 12 to 16 years of age was a second-degree felony. Leigh Corfman was the most obvious of these, assuming her claim (backed up by multiple sources) is correct. But there were other girls who were 16 and hence also represent felonies.

This joker Roy Moore was never even close to meeting the ethical and legal standards of his time.

Again, the article states, "represent only a tiny subset of American evangelicalism".

And that would be an EXTREMELY tiny subset. I have never met an
Evangelical that condones what this is suggesting.

And the OP has titled their post using the word "many".

It would seem there are "many" liberal Democrats who practice such unseemly behaviour as well. In fact, is it true that while "everyone knew" what Moore was doing..he was a Democrat and no one said anything?

Moore was never a democrat.

You don't know what you are talking about. He ran as a Democrat in 1982 and again in 1986. He switched parties from the Democrats to the Republicans in 1992.

This is correct. Moore never won any elections as a democrat, but he did run as one in his loser, jail-bait-chasing days.

Both Rush Limbaugh and "Politico" reported that he was.
Other news sources are disputing those reports.

Were you around in Alabama then, and have first-hand knowledge? I'd take that as valid :)

I find it amusing (and pretty sad), though, that Limbaugh (and apparently, you) seem to think that if he was a Democrat when he molested teen girls, that's somehow the fault of the Democrats. He's slime. He was slime if he was a Democrat, he's slime now as a Republican. It's not the fault of the party he belongs to, it's *his* fault.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Moore

"Several weeks after the state bar investigation was dismissed as unfounded, Moore quit his prosecuting position to run as a Democrat for the county's circuit-court judge seat in 1982. The election was bitter, with Moore alleging that cases were being delayed in exchange for payoffs. The allegations were never substantiated. Moore overwhelmingly lost the Democratic runoff primary to fellow attorney Donald Stewart, whom Moore described as "an honorable man for whom I have much respect, (who) eventually became a close friend".[19] A second bar complaint against Moore followed, which was dismissed as unfounded. Moore left Gadsden shortly thereafter to live for a year in Australia.[22][23]

Moore returned to Gadsden again in 1985. He ran in 1986 for Etowah County's district attorney position against fellow Democrat Jimmy Hedgspeth. Losing once more, Moore returned to private practice in the city. In 1985, he married Kayla Kisor, 14 years his junior.[24] In 1992, Moore switched his affiliation to the GOP. He displayed a wooden Ten Commandments plaque in his courtroom.[25]"

>It's not the fault of the party he belongs to, it's *his* fault.
I fully agree with that.

"The American Family Association stood by its endorsement of Moore, writing in a statement, “AFA Action believes Justice Roy Moore to be a truthful man and a solid Christian.” Bryan Fischer, a radio host for AFA’s American Family Radio, wrote that establishment Republicans were turning against Moore because they “despise ordinary Americans like us who believe in the Ten Commandments, natural marriage, normative sexuality, right and wrong, the Constitution as written by the Founders, the rule of law, and the Judeo-Christian tradition of truth claims and moral values.”

In a patriarchal system, females exist for the pleasure of men.

I too feel that the subject line is a misrepresentation. I believe that the vast majority of the people in this world are good people who are trying hard. Even the evangelicals.

Would you prefer "tribal, racist white Christian identity conservative religious people who are obsessed with conspiracy theories, biblical literalism, prophesy, creationism, eschatology and dominionism and live within a closed theological, ideological and cultural mindset"....
