I live in North Central Idaho, Latah County, Moscow. Home of the University of Idaho and 8 miles east of Washington State University in Pullman, WA.

This county in Idaho is liberal and very tolerant. Only about 5% Mormons here. And when you factor in the number of inactives, you rarely see a Mormon unless you are a school teacher.

Just wanted you to know that some parts of Idaho are very nice to live in, tolerant, compassionate and good places to live.

Du-bwa is the correct French pronunciation of the French surname. But it is not unusual for the name to be Americanized into Du-boys.

Psychic medium Allison DuBois, whose life is the subject of the TV series, "Medium," pronounces her name Du-boys.

Technically, "Boise" is "bwa-zay."
But of course nobody in Eedahoe pronounces it that way.

So yeah, Du-bwa is probably (like bwa-zay) Du-boys there.
For the same reason.

When I was around 13-15 I was in Idaho on family vacation with my mom and her 3 sisters. Two of the sisters were living in Idaho and we lived in seattle. I was reading something and my Aunt LaMon (I know, right?), with a giant snear on her face, said "why do you keep saying 'doo-bwa'? It's 'doo-boyce'.

So there I sat, correct and wrong at the same time.

I find all things even remotely related to Mormonism to be very unrewarding, and for me, that's the entire strip from Idaho to Arizona.

I always mispronounce French and commit a fox pass.

I'm from Idaho. I had relatives in Doo-boyce. That's the way we pronounced it.

I grew up in Southeast Idaho (aka Little Utah) and would have pronounced it "Duboyz."
Then again, I didn't take French in high school.
I don't know what people in Eastern Washington would call him though.

I went to high school for one year in Dubois, Idaho.

We pronounced it "Du-boice" - and yes, it was named thus after Fred Dubois, the politician.

I don't live Idaho or even Utah. I live in the ruby red flatlands of Indiana, but I went to school with several kids whose last names were Dubois.

One of them pronounced it Du-boyz.
The other ones all pronounced it Du-boy. With a very silent "s" on the end.

What's interesting to me is that NONE of them "Frechified" it. They were either "DuBoy" or "DuBoyz." No Du-bwa. Nope, nope, nope. :)

Well my family name was Americanized from the French name Chamois long before any Shumways ever arrived in Idyho.

I'm working on a proposal for a presentation, and if accepted, long time down the road, I would present it to a group which would include some native Idahoans as well as strangers to the region.

I once wrote a paper for a linguistics class on Utahnics. Growing up in SLT in the '50s I heard locals make fun of how some people from Idaho talked, but then I moved to CA and found out how much fun people made of that Utah Accent.

I know that Dubois, WY is pronounce Do-boyz. I've always been surprised that there wasn't a monastery there. Or at least a boy scout camp.

Just like it looks without the French accents. Dooboyce. Used to have to stop there for truck permits at the Conoco. If you said the town's name using the French pronunciation they'd look at ya like y'all wuz from Mars!

I remember the Conoco station. Wasn't it Conoco on one side of the street, and a Texaco station (or its equivalent,) on the other?

Dubois doesn't look like it's changed much in the intervening years since I lived there. Still the same population, only the town is more run down.

It isn't the kind of place people aspire to. It's more the kind of place people dream of leaving. I know because I was one of those.
