I have a question:

Are they still doing Gold and Green balls?

If not, when did they discontinue them?

Any particular reason ever given as to why they discontinued them?

Just curious.

I used to look forward to the Gold and Green ball every year, but that was in the 1970s.

They were an annual dance and dinner deal mostly I think for married folks and couples. It was a fancy deal. Folks dressed up. In NY it ended many years ago. In the West and Utah, I don't know. Check Google.

"Are they still doing Gold and Green balls?"

They were replaced by Cold and Blue balls. Church leadership thought that was better descriptive representation that the male priesthood holders could relate to.

Yup, the last one I remember attending in NY was in the late '80s.

I used to go... it was like a Mormon debutant ball, LOL. I went twice: once with my soon to be step-brother (my mom ended up marrying his dad) and once with a guy who was in his 20s when I was a teen.

Just another fun event cut out of the Mormon church, like roadshow, dance festival, etc. Can't be spending that tithing money on fun when there are shopping malls and temples waiting to be built!

My parents talked about them. I'm 54. They were long gone before my time. I was in Utah until '84.

Well, it wasn't WAY before your time. I'm older than you but less than a decade. They were a really big deal in our stake. I remember when I was a debutante and was presented. They were very formal, we usually had a live band and it would be for all youth (14+) and adults. But you are right, they went the way of all fun stuff after correlation. Have to buy land in Florida, hunting preserves and $35 million dollar manuscripts. Not nearly enough brainwashing for the money they spent on them.

I never went to one, but my parents sure did. They looked forward to attending them and yes, they were fancy dress. I think they ended in my stake around 1984 or 85. My mom often lamented the termination of such balls. I think they were a victim of SLC budget reform and correlation. Eventually, adult stake [sweetheart] dances for couples were created around Valentine's Day.

When the church transitioned from culture to cult all the fun things were done away with.

There was a statement that the church was not there to entertain.

I think late 70s or early 80s

Why Gold and Green?

In World According to Garp the school's coolers were green and gold and the wrestlers referred to them as Puke and Babys#¡t.

why gold and green ? because those are MORmONISM'S official colors. Gold and Green, as in Money and Money are what they want from people !!!!

I thought Gold & Green were tscc's "Official Colors", kinda like the honeybee, etc.

Back then, at least where I lived, there were fancy society "Black and White" balls, so maybe calling it a "Gold and Green" ball was the Mormon Church's way to compete and feel relevant. The Mormon ball was kind of a coming out ball for the 18 year old Laurels, just like a debutant ball. I actually heard a Laurel describe it to her never-mo friend as a debutant ball. The Laurels were "presented" on the stage in the gym where the ball was held (fancy) and her father escorted her down the stairs while everyone watched. My nevermo dad escorted me down the steps. Before the ball the Laurels had to practice walking up and down stairs so we would do it properly. The ball was attended by parents of Laurels and adults in the stake. I thought it was really corny.

I'm in Scotland, still held here. Though they are utter shit. Used to be held in a hall rented by the Church specially, now its just in the gym hall at Chapel. Terrible music, terrible food etc. Not worth going too.

I don't ever remember them being held in the Dundee Stake outside of the Stake Center building itself. But then I attended the ward in the Stake Center. LOL

But maybe in the smaller buildings where there isn't a lot of room it needed to be held in a rented space.

I thought they had stopped them in Dundee Stake before I left the area (1999) since they had no funding for such parties anymore due to the centralised funding system put in place. I guess they resurrected them.

They used to decorate the cultural hall with tonnes of gold and green ribbons and stuff. It still wasn't a great event (for my age group), but at least they put in a lot of effort and the people attending did typically enjoy themselves.

....so, the MORmON Gold and Green Balls were somehow universally eliminated at jussssssstttttt about the very same time that (kill joy) Gordon B.S. Hinckley had virtually taken over the MORmON church by being the only viable functioning member person in the LDS (Inc) First Presidency as the other members of the First Presidency were completely incapacitated by geriatric infirmity.

....Hmmmmm....

and that Gordon B.S. Hinckley is the very same person who right after he had seized control of his Stake by becoming Stake president, then canceled their Stake Lagoon day, turned it into a Stake work day to assist in the construction of the new stake center instead, while also applying the funds for Stake Lagoon day to the Stake Building Construction fund, just as that instance was recounted in Gordon BS Hinckley's official LDS inc Video biography as a testament to Gordon BS Hinckley's un flinching dedication and devotion to higher LDS inc causes.

.....Hmmmmmm.......

and somehow for some reason (with out any overt mention) that very account has been edited OUT of the new revised Gordon B.S. Hinckley official video biography that LDS Inc currently provides ......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqtN0f7vV-E

...hmmmmmm.......

and that Gordon B.S. Hinckley is the very same person who effectively did away with the ward level missionary farewell sacrament meetings .......that he did not like because it put an undue emphasis on the individual member just because they were going to be a full time missionary.

while then also indulging in epic blow out birthday celebration extravaganzas for himself as PRofit and President of LDS Inc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLICxCiD6Ks

......hmmmmmmmm.........

Well, Gordon was a PR genius !!!!! who deserved all of the admiration and adulation that was directed to him by MORmON members.

I met GBH while on my mission in 1978. He was a total fuckwad. If there is a hell, Gordon is a special place in it.

I met him once in 1980...just asked for a picture. He could not be prevailed upon to smile. On the other hand Jack Goaslind and Franklin Richards were gracious and genuinely nice...but they were only 70's.

Never heard of the gold and green ball. Grew up in the church in the 80's/mid 90's

All three of my sisters were presented at the stake gold and green ball their senior year of high school.
It was just like a debutante ball: The girls were presented and had their accomplishments read out. Then they were escorted by and had a dance with their dads. IIRC, only the laurels themselves wore gowns (my sisters wore their prom dresses) and I think the dads were in tuxedos. The other attendees weren't so formal.
(My sisters graduated in 1979, 1981 and 1986) by the time I graduated in 1989, they were done away with. I remember my female classmates being upset they didn't get to be presented.
As far as the name goes: My mother told me (when I asked why they were called Gold and Green Balls) that gold and green were the official colors of the Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association.
(Edited to add; This was in a stake in Southern California)

Perhaps that's the local name for the ball where my family lived and they said the gold first in other places.

Yes it was the colors of Young Women. Went to several accross the country in what we called the Misson Field. The branches and a few wards were far flung so often it was held in a large rented hall. A few were misson-wide rather than stake. Great fun to see people from far away. A fun chance to dress up after so many Sundays of wrinkled white shirts and hand-me-down suits and dresses. I always thought Mormons a sloppy bunch. In Alaska the rough muddy shoes and boots with dresses are a hoot!

My ward still held them when I was in high school in the Midwest in 2002. They were in the "cultural hall." I was a convert kid and was looking forward to the dance, but I was told it was only for married couples from the young to the old: the older ones were "gold," and the younger ones were "green."

They were BIG in the late 70s/ early 80s. As I became a teenager they were cut out, leaving just stupid dances (with no names). No more free-agency! No more food! No more fun! Only Fools, Fool's Gold, and Green Balls.
