Right! It's not what he says, but how he says it. It's only 'official' if he says it in Latin.

In Argentina, since he is argentinian, although I don't like him or any other pope, since Mr Bergoglio became "Pope Francis" lots of Argentinians became Pope fans.

The guy is not an intellectual lightweight.

He has a scientific background and is influential. I am glad that he is speaking out on this important issue. No, I dont agree with him on everything, but some of these knee-jerk comments would be funny if they were so ridiculous. The fact that we had two 'hurricans of the century' in one week might be a clue that he is on to something just in case you are a climate change denier as well as anti pope everything. If Francis said that grass is green, some of you would want to argue.

Francis comes out of the Latin American "Liberation Theology" school of thought, which tends to be anti-capitalism, anti-industrial and sympathetic to Socialism and left-of-center politics.

He's an ox who gores both sides of the debate. As a Catholic, he'll uphold moral conservatism (homosexuality, abortion, sanctity of marriage, the Bible, etc.). As a man schooled by left-of-center academics, he'll support policies you'd associate with the Clintons or Bernie Sanders.

So it figures he buys into open borders, "global warming," diminution of Western culture, wealth redistribution, socialized "single-payer" health care, and so on.

What to do about it is a social and political problem.

Religious professionals should not be excluded from "the public square." Many academic and philanthropic activities we consign to the government were once handled by religion.

I see him as right on some issues, wrong on others. He's perfectly free to (ahem!) pontificate all he wants.

Sure.
And I'm perfectly free to ignore him.
Even when what he says makes sense (though it often doesn't).

He actually makes some sense in those statements -- go ask the scientists. Don't pretend observable facts aren't there.

However, my gripe is that there are a fair number of people who will "believe" what he says because he's the pope, and ONLY because he's the pope. Not because of reason, not because of evidence -- but 'cause the pope said so.

Exactly. He has a right to speak out on somethig that affects the future of the planet and he is right on this issue.

I know many non-Catholics who admire him. The many of the radical traditional Catholics don't like him. Go figure. I like him.
