There is a black person on the cover of the new Ensign that came out a couple of weeks ago. Normally, my parents put the Ensigns out on display on their coffee table, but this month's oddly keeps gets folded and put under some other magazines.

I keep unfolding it and putting it back on the top of the stack, so they can look at it all the time. The next day, sure enough, it's folded and underneath Costco Connection. So funny!

How bad is it when the Mormon church isn't racist enough for you?

Too bad there isn't a black person on the cover of the Costco Connection. Some other publication would have to move to the top of the stack.

I have no idea who paid for the subscription, but I started getting the Ensign this year for the first time in many years. Every month, it makes an uninterrupted trip from my mailbox to the recycle bin.

You or the subscriber will get the refund. It's a win-win either way.

All the while refusing to apologize for Brigham Young's bigotry, much less repudiate it. Instead they explain with (essentially) "He was a product of the culture of the time," and "We don't know why he said those things."

I, too, noticed the irony about Elder Neil Anderson writing "The Divine Standard of Honesty."

We have to remember, though, that the Q15 are merely playing to their audience...TBMs eat this stuff up.

I notice that additional articles in the issue include:

"Blessing Those Who Are Less Active"

and

"Prompted to Pay Tithing"

They never quit, do they?

Not allowing even a picture of dark skin on the coffee table to show - I'm the sort who would take the issue, frame it, and screw that frame into the studs in my room (so they can't easily remove it).

If asked about it:

"...Well, mom, because I noticed it kept falling under other magazines, and I appreciate LDS claims to be no longer racist. I like to see that in action...don't you?"

I would swallow the chunks and say it. It goes without saying that I was hit - a lot.

I remember my mom being mortified years ago when she saw a woman wearing a Utah Jazz T-Shirt with a big picture of Carl Malone on the front. She said, "That woman has a black man draped over her breasts. That's disgusting."

They try so hard to pretend they are diverse and open minded but it is the little actions like hiding the Ensign that reveal the most.

The racism is still there. Mormonism is just not a truly diverse culture. Showing a black person in the choir or Ensign is not fooling anyone.

Every black investigator or member I knew in my 30 years in the cult all left the church do to the other members. The racism is still alive and well. Dark skin= curse. We grew up looking down on black people and they noticed this with the elitist attutide and better than thou belief especially present in the Mormon old farts. The black people all told me the same story, they left the church do to not feeling equal or included. LDS Inc is working extra hard now to get their tithing dollars. Pretty pathetic.

Mormons support segregation. Spanish wards, Tongan wards, that are separate than the white wards. Sound familiar?

Interracial relationships/marriages are looked down on as well.
I remember hearing my former TBM roommates (who describe themselves as "Hardcore Utah Mormons") talk about our former Bishop and his wife. Our former Bishop's wife is from Japan, and our former Bishop looks Caucasian, although he has a little bit of Chinese ancestry. They were talking about this and one of my roommates said, "Well, it makes since now that he's married to HER."
I'm just sitting there thinking, "Maybe he fell in love with the person, and not the ethnicity?" Living with my roommates really opened my eyes to things with the church.

A couple of members in that ward said the same thing. I knew one older lady that would look at every interracial couple that walked in like it was something foreign.

Yeah but he looks like he's looking at porn. Lol

I think there's cog-dis from church propaganda being multiracial, but church leadership being all white Utahns.

Flipping through a conference issue of the ENSIGN a few years ago
I noticed that it was sprinkled throughout with pictures of
conference-goers relaxing on Temple Square, having box lunches
etc. What struck me was that, from just looking at the pictures
one would get the impression that the LDS Church membership was

They're really trying to live down their history.

Look at all the covers of all Church magazines before June of
1978. How many of them had a black person on the cover?

In the "land of Zion", there was/is a separate cemetery for Polynesians. My DH and I are a mixed race/culture couple and we have experienced covert and overt racism; from questions like "YOU live HERE??!, to vandalism. Mormons think they hide their prejudice but they do a poor job of it.
