Hearing that Emma took the brother shopping and left the sister with Mr. Giggle Trousers himself, leads me to think that Emma was complicit in Smith's crimes.

Kath, your Giggle Trousers household was quite obviously run by a Bonnie & Clyde pair, long complicit in sex and other crimes.
