Very interesting article. I hope RfMers read it.

Many seem to think FLDS is the one and only polygamous cult in Utah. No, that's very wrong.

The Kingstons are bigger and richer and the Allreds are also quite large. There are hundreds of other groups of every size throughout the area. They are usually secretive and many of them don't dress or act in ways which identify them. Some of them infiltrate the mainstream mormon church and no one notices.

The Kingstons are worse than most. They require incest, forced labor, physical abuse and they give birth to large numbers of sadly deformed babies who do not receive proper medical attention. These people depend on herbal tea and blessings for healing and they blame the victim when these measures fail.

They don't mix with outsiders which means many people in Utah can deny they exist. Utah people need to wake up and accept responsibility!

Speaking of incest with the Kingstons - a quick story. My wife is a nurse, and during a labor and delivery rotation, she had a patient who delivered a baby with a number of birth defects, including eyes too close together, webbed toes, etc. The attending commented to my wife that the woman was from the Kingstons and was married to her first cousin, and this was not the first baby she had like this.

And to think -- we can lay the ultimate blame for all of this on Joseph Smith. Fundamentalist Mormon polygamy would not exist in this nation (and Canada and Mexico) were it not for him. TBMs like to forget that.

If you're not watching it, you should really start Escaping Polygamy. They had a couple of update episodes this season with mostly reasonably happy endings and a few did go back to the FLDS and the Kingston group.
