Deep space, ... and counting.

The Voyagers I and II journeys are to traverse the Universe forever. So far they have not been bit by the cosmic dust, and no one has pirated their machinations. If they did, would the aliens know what to do with the golden discs they find, similar to CD's or what the old 33RPM records looked like (except they're spun from gold?)

They contain photographs from earth, with sounds included. :)

I love this story because it speaks to the great value we place on the human imagination.

What could happen as a result of these probes? Maybe nothing.

But maybe something. When we're speaking of deep space, the possibilities are limited only by our imaginations.

I was impressed by the fact that NASA engaged the use of REAL, not IMAGINARY tablets made of gold.

Hehehe. They are verifiable, not made of folklore or fairytale.

It's just that "what if" scenario happens, and a gargantuan Cookie Monster interspace traveler stumbles across them, and decides maybe it's something edible? Takes a nibble from the gold tablets ... even if he can't bite em or chew em, there will be enough indelible scratches as to make their recovery improbable.

NASA still has to try nonetheless, to communicate with our friends or foes out there (wherever "there" is.) :)

Advanced creatures might find it and play the disc and determine that we are a good source of protein and come to earth and eat us! All could have been prevented if we hadn't sent those damn probes. (Doing my best imitation of Dr. McCoy)

And, IIRC, that disc has an engraving of two full frontal naked people, one of each.

Wonder if the Q15 would consider that to be porn.

The nudies are actually engraved into plaques attached to two other spacecraft (Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11), which, along with the Voyagers, are also headed for the stars ("space-porn" warning):
