Small animals appear welcome at evac centers.

I would turn large animal loose.

When I was growing up, my paternal grandparents moved from Southern California to Yuba City, where my Grandpa and my Dad built my grandparents' house on a huge (to me) lot on Villa Avenue. (Besides the house "in front," the rest of the "residential" lot was supposed to be part-farm, and part-pasture.)

I spent a great deal of time, growing up, in that Butte County/Sutter County/Yuba County area...

:(

Our local news in Sacramento is telling people not to worry, but four towns are being evacuated. Yuba county is right in the path of the water if it goes. The dam has never had this much pressure on it. Will it hold?

THIS time, I hope they have evacuated the Marysville jail. :(

Also: since the town limits of Marysville and Yuba City are divided by the river (which is also the county line), why is Yuba City not under an evacuation order?

[EDITED TO ADD: Yuba City IS under an evacuation order.]

I don't know (I am in Southern California).

I also don't know Oroville at all. I have been through it a number of times (mostly, when I was growing up), but it is not a place that I have any actual familiarity with.

I'm sorry, paintinginthewin.

The dam itself is fine and not in danger, at least not in the short to mid term. What is in danger is the 30 foot tall emergency spillway. If it fails, the top 30 feet of the reservoir, which is a very large amount of water, will uncontrollably leave the reservoir.

This is much, much better than the entire dam failing, but still very serious and still would do an incredible amount of damage.

As of 10:15 flow over the emergency spillway has apparently stopped.

I'm watching from high ground. I live in the foothill town of Rocklin, and we're well above the valley floor. The Oroville reservoir is essential for water supply in this region. If the dam is breached, water storage will be reduced along with several towns going under. It's nerve wracking.

I am feeling for you, Don...and I am feeling for everyone who has reason to be afraid of possible flooding...

...including the animals. I know that small animals like dogs and cats will be accepted at many of the shelters, but I worry for the cows and horses and all of the other farm animals. There are so many "residential" lots in that area which are home to pigs and goats---and probably some sheep, as well. When I was growing up, the house across the street from my grandparents' house always had pigs, and some of the best times I had back then were when I got to feed the pigs. [I forgot the chickens and the ducks! :( ] [*]

I am very glad that you and your family are high above the valley floor, and are safe. :)

EDITED TO ADD: Not to mention, of course!, the herds of cows, horses (etc.) on the dairy farms, etc. I am concerned about them, too!!

Gibson Ranch, a large ranch near Sacramento has opened to horses and other large animals that need higher ground. Roseville fairgrounds has also opened to evacuees and has resources for animals. Pets are allowed in most shelters.

It's a worrisome situation. I'm sending good thoughts to everyone in the area. Those who are safe are worried about those who are not.

News Flash - President Monson, councilors and Apostles to the name of Jesus Christ have said a trite prayer to their magical god and the town or some parts of the town may or may not be saved based on what the magical children of homosexuals hating god feels like today.

Praise god for this miracle brought to you by President Monson and your local TBM's.

Seriously - I hope the Dam holds and no one gets hurt.
