Is this happening within Mormonism? Or does the small size of the The Churchâ„¢ allow for tighter control and the ability to squash dissent?

The youth of most western nations tend to be more liberal than their parents in at least a small degree.

The current POTUS was a problem for many religious people because he talked the sort of policies many liked, but exhibited behavior many abhor. Many were forced to choose between political expediency that may further their political wishes and endorsing somebody that displayed unacceptable behavior.

Regarding the age/conservative match that also is somewhat constant. Aging populations tend to skew more conservative. It's probably related in part to an attempt to conserve their personal funds so they can have more control over their "golden" years instead of relying upon a bankrupt government to support them. Greece is a good example of how this can result in unfunded retirements and poverty in old age. With age, many people learn to trust themselves with their money more than their government. That's a basic component of conservatism.
