I used to live in a Stake where the Stake President would always have an adult fireside or meeting during Super Bowl. They would take names as to who the faithful were. Stake Positions would change shortly afterwards.

The obedient ass kissers were rewarded, right? If you can call having a stake job a reward rather than punishment.

In 1970, some local leader or general authority (I don't remember which) claimed from the pulpit that the newly created Monday Night Football was a plot by Lucifer to disrupt Family Home Evening.

I mean, everyone knows BYU football is the only approved football.

Funny how it's okay to interview the BYU coaches on Sportsbeat Sunday on church owned KSL TV station. Hey, as long as the team isn't playing.

Found this. The address was given by Hurtmy Rectum, sorry I mean Hartman Rector, at the October 1971 GC.

Church News, October 9, 1971, p. 4:

"'I think it is very interesting,' [Rector] said, 'that last fall as soon as the Lord announced that the Church would hold Family Home Evening every Monday night, it was immediately announced from the other side that there was going to be a professional football game on Monday evenings. You would be surprised to know how many families tried to hold Family Home Evenings during half time of the game. Of course, it can't be done.'"

The other side?

FOOTBALL (half time) IS FHE - (Mormon) families/footballs harm-hurt-hurry everybody - still, everyone can be home in the evening for the game.

The Monday Night Football announcement came in May 1969:

And the Family Home Evening announcement came in September 1970:

Seems to me like "the Lord's servants," knowing what was coming, decided to "test the faithful," as they so often do and "party poopers" that they are!

At my house, Monday Night Football brought greater peace and harmony than a single crappy Family Home Evening lesson. Every time, it was pushed then we had a giant squabble and fight. I have a lot of bad memories from those stupid lessons.

Stake Priesthood meeting was always at the same time as the Super Bowl in my stake. I actually complained to the Stake President that it was an obvious attempt to interfere with our free agency. I didn't get very far.
