You were in a Christian/Mormon church that believes in a magic sky daddy born to a virgin who in the old testament killed every single thing on earth including babies and animals and you don't have words for the intolerance you heard today. What the hell were you smoking. How the hell were you surprised by that?
You should have heard the lessons I got a "Sunday School" and "Primary" in the mid 1960's. Back then, it was the blacks (not called that, of course, back then it was always the "n" word) who were bad, trying to bring down the church, ruining the social order, trying to take over the property and morals of "good people" (meaning whites).
The church's intolerance doesn't change, though the target of their intolerance does.
