I don't know this man but it looks like he has a history with the church and has written a number of books and taught about those subjects.

I find it interesting that his services aren't being held in a stake center in Fullerton CA, but rather at CSU.

Does that mean he was exed or resigned. Doesn't matter one way or another, but even his name is interesting.

It's a good thing he resigned from BYU way back then. I wonder how he managed while writing the various research papers he wrote. Do you think the church called a "Court" on him? It's a good thing he moved to California.

Thank you for posting this. It's nice to see an early finder of truth.

Oh, geez -- I had Hardy as my history teacher in my second year at CSUF (1983).
I had *no idea whatsoever* that he was either mormon or ex-mormon.

He certainly didn't give his history lessons any mormon spin, he wasn't a "young earther," and he didn't pretend Native Americans were descended from old-world Hebrews.

I do remember him as smart, kind, and generous with his time.

RIP Prof. Hardy.

In one of Hardy's Dialogue articles he explained his relationship with the church. I don't think he was ever exed. His two books on polygamy, Solemn Covenant and Doing the Works of Abraham, are excellent research tools and interesting to read.

Solemn Covenant has an Appendix, an essay by Hardy, called "Lying for the Lord." You can find it online.

Check out his obituary on the JI blog to find links to his articles.

I'm glad that you noted that. I'd heard of Hardy's writings and read quotes from them, but had never read his actual works. The essay you refer to is at:

http://www.mormonismi.net/pdf/lying_for_the_lord.pdf

I read the first two pages. I had known most of the material from my own studies over the last 20 years. The interesting part is that many of the TBMs whom I used to debate Mormon issues with steadfastly denied that Joseph Smith or other early church leaders had lied about polygamy. Hardy's paper makes it clear that they did. Too bad that I didn't have a link to Hardy's essay when I was debating the Mobots.

For newbies, here are some old posts containing my dialogue with TBMs on the subject:
