Woo-hoo! Loot at them bare Mormon shoulders being promoted by
BYU!

A 1956 (the year after I was baptized) BYU film about making
right choices and running with the right crowd etc.

at 8:10 in the video it's a scene just as Mutual is letting
out. One good Mormon girl is there with a sleeveless dress and
the protagonist, who has skipped Mutual to hang with the "wrong
crowd" is showing up just in time to keep her parents from
finding out she's been cutting MIA. And SHE's wearing a
sleeveless top.

Just goes to show how the "modesty" angle of sleeves is a
recent bit of BS that the Church has floated. Originally it
was to keep women from being disgusted that they couldn't wear
their old wardrobe once they had gone through the temple and
were wearing garmies. But the dishonest Morg couldn't come
right out and say that since (1) the kids would rebel against
wearing something now that would not matter for 5 or 6 years
and (2) temple garmies are super-sacred (secret) and not to be
talked about. This was back when they used to advise that when
hanging laundry out to dry to put the garmies on the inside
lines so they'd be hidden from view by the sheets etc. on the
outside lines.

So it was supposedly all about "modesty." However back in
1956, without a doubt the most "modest" time in American
history (this was back when some husbands and wives on TV
sitcoms were shown sleeping in separate beds), sleeveless
attire for pre-endowed Mormon girls was not only acceptable but
flaunted in Church morality videos.

Here's another scene later showing the Gold and Green Ball--a
Church-sponsored dance. Notice all the sleeveless dresses the
good Mormon girls are wearing at the good Mormon dance.

So, guys, stare at them bare shoulders all you want. It's a
Church video!

Just goes to show how God keeps changing his mind about stuff
over and over again.

It's not about fashion . . . it's about the eternal gospel
principle of modesty--which God changed his mind about sometime
after 1956.

I hope you're not talking about what you're doing in response to
seeing all those lascivious bare shoulders.

"That was the most perfect trip. It was the first time I'd been in the mountains with girls my own age..."

And what happens next with those young girls in the mountain cabin...well, my imagination soars!

Between the suggestive dialog (like above) and the bare shoulders, this qualifies as a porn film indeed.

:)

Sleeveless tops for unmarried girls were never a point of discussion in the late 60s/Early 70s. You had to wear skirts that touched the floor when you knelt down, but you could have a sleeveless top on. I literally never remember it being talked about. And trust me, if my parents let me wear them, it wasn't an issue because we sure had issues over skirt lengths. Especially when girls couldn't wear pants in high school. We all knew we'd have to throw out some clothes after we went through the temple.

Another reason it might be such a big thing now is that there are many single girls who have to wear garmies. It's not fair at BYU that they would have to cover their shoulders if they let other girls wear sleeveless. Back in my day, unmarried women only got endowed if they were going on a mission and those ones were few and over 21. I think if a woman made it to her 40s or so and wasn't married, they'd let her go through on her own.

My wife told me she watched these videos in MIA.

Sometimes, cultural norms seem to come from the bottom up as well as the top down. They get incorporated into the culture and pretty soon, nobody knows where they started and they accept them as the "standard". I am reminded of the thread about the bishop's wife in the Tongan Ward in Provo.
