has been seen in North Korea. The article, published on Yahoo Japan says he has a wife and two children and works as an English teacher.

Nice to see he didn't have to die to get to the Celestial Kingdom.

the story is he was kidnapped, forced to teach english, forced to marry. Can't be proved at this point, but, especially having a wife and children complicates any rescue

That's a strange story, for sure.

Getting into North Korea is fraught with peril by itself. Foreigners are often falsely accused of being spies just for showing up.

If he was truly kidnapped - wouldn't there be a public outcry for his deportment?

If he's tutoring Kim Jong Un as the article cites, well heck, would that have been a motive for kidnapping? Jeebus, Kim Jong Un is a dictator who stops at nothing to meet his goals. He murders his own relatives when it suits him.

Wonder what he'll do to this young man when he's of no more use to him? More intrigue from a despot.

Yeah, but this guy was in hiking in CHINA when he was abducted.

So far as I know from what I read, he was not trying to get to North Korea...he was just hiking in the Chinese mountains, minding his own business, when he was kidnapped by North Koreans.

North Korea has kidnapped dozens of foreigners over the last few decades, including a number to teach languages to the elite and the spy service. Japan went so far as to demand, as the price for better relations ten or so years ago, that 12 or 13 of them be allowed to visit their families in Japan. One or two of them did not make the trip: dead, North Korea ominously said. This was all open diplomacy, with official statements, photos, lots of news coverage. . .

Here is an article in the New Yorker from last year. There are literally dozens more on the Japanese angle alone. But North Korea has abducted lots of people from other countries, too.

There is no question that this happens. The missionary story is plausible.

There is a new book on the topic called "The Invitation-Only Zone." The author is a widely-published author with a position at NYU; and the book has been reviewed by serious places.

The author states that there are presently 500 abductees in North Korea.
