There are so many songs from the 60's that I still enjoy listening to that were banned from being played at LDS dances. Mostly Rock N Roll was banned but never Country. Church leaders used to say Rock N Roll was from the devil.

What songs do you like and why?

The dichotomy between the Armory dances and church dances is classically displayed in the song "I can't get no satisfaction."

This is an easy one for me. Back in the day, I had a combo and we played "covers" -- all instrumental. We were setting up for a youth dance at the church and we played: "Light My Fire" by the Doors (or own arrangement) and one of the priesthood brethren had a fit. He came running up to the stage and demanding we stop playing that music! Don't recall what all he said, but he was really upset!! I couldn't see the problem. We did not have a vocalist!

One more thing... all of Elvis's music was banned because of his "gyrating" (remember how he was filmed from the waist up on Ed Sullivan?). He was a No-No for a long time!

Relax - Frankie goes to hollywood.

That was banned from the radio too but then it was the 80s and they were all gay. It still has a great baseline :)

They played Relax at our stake dances and probably a few others that wouldn't have been played if leaders were paying attention.

I'm thinking Ian Dury's "Sex & Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll" would've been a tough sell at those dances...

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Is all my brain and body need
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Are very good indeed

Keep your silly ways or throw them out the window
The wisdom of your ways, I've been there and I know
Lots of other ways, what a jolly bad show
If all you ever do is business you don't like

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Is very good indeed

Every bit of clothing ought to make you pretty
You can cut the clothing, gray is such a pity
I should wear the clothing of Mr. Walter Mitty
See my tailor, he's called Simon, I know it's going to fit

Here's a little piece of advice
You're quite welcome it is free
Don't do nothing that is cut price
You know what that'll make you be

They will try their tricky device
Trap you with the ordinary
Get your teeth into a small slice
The cake of liberty

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll

Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex and drugs and rock and roll
Sex, drugs, rock, roll, sex, drugs, rock, roll...

A DJ one played the Time Warp at a dance...I was both excited and shocked he played it and did the dance along with the call-backs with a couple of hipper Mo friends.

At another dance, I went up and asked him to play it, but he told me the song was now verboten, lol.

Never went to a church dance until I got to Ricks...but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been playing Led Zepelin or Iron Butterfly!!

The 1969 song In The Year 2525 by Zager and Evans. Some smart ass punk told the bishop it was a song about when the church had been dead and gone for 500 years. And the punk refused to go on a mission.

As a high counselor I had to supervise stake dances. I never censored the music. One DJ once asked me what I thought of his having played the Village People at a retro themed party. I told him with out the smell of Crisco and poppers it just wasn't the same. YMCA was a big hit though. He had to play it twice.

I put in a song request once at a church dance for Guns N' Roses' 'Sweet Child of Mine' and the bishop flipped out and accused me of trying to bring the spirit of Satan into God's house. At every bishop's interview afterwards, I was asked if I still listened to Satanic music.

Stupid cult.
