I think Monson and Co do a pretty good job of being apostates. They have abandoned a lot of doctrines that I remember from the 1980's, so they are already apostates compared to the old church.
Monson is great at making stupid decisions, whether by insanity or by design. Nobody is doing more to drive members away than those in charge of keeping them in.
If I was responsible for the "error", I would blame the spellcheck too, even though I can't think of a possible mis-spelling that would favor apostate over apostle.
