He was rather disappointed with it. But then a 20 year wait for the sequel didn't help much. The link below explains why it bombed pretty well. Caution! Spoilers!

Aw - I was looking forward to that movie.

I saw the original "Independece Day" movie ON July 4 when it came out and really enjoyed it. Will Smith MADE that movie. But I remember how the theater was packed and how everyone cheered when it got to the part of the movie that happened on July 4. It was so much fun.

I'm not sure that I would call a movie that makes back 87% of its cost of production in the first weekend a "bomb." It should move into the black given a week or so, and then you still have DVDs, licensing fees, etc.

Nowadays a movie needs to make double the production costs domestically. Overseas is a different market.

Yea, but he was in an 'alien coma'. Gosh.

I was really excited when I found out Brent Spiner was gonna be in this one, I had forgotten he was in the first one. I am a huge Star Trek: TNG geek, and thus am a huge fan of Brent Spiner, being one of the more talented actors from the Star Trek Universe. However, it seems like his role is pretty minor, and the movie is pretty terrible. Maybe I'll watch it on TV in a few years, like most people I know who've seen the first one...

I kept picturing Brent Sooner as Data with a bad haircut. But then he'll be forever associated with that role....

Oh, that's too bad. I liked the one that came out 20 years ago.

Now I may wait for this to come on TV. Ah, what the heck, the 4th is coming up. Although Free State of Jones is tops on my list. I already watched "Now you see me" sequel. I didn't see the first one until after watching the sequel. Honestly, I didn't like either.

Hollywood and the church are so much the same...limited plots to exploit...you can only go so far to find anything to remake...many themes were lame the first time and crippled the second...most remakes need life support cuz the originals wont do a schtick script thrown together by some kid of a producer who cant write or direct...and theres no end of money to allow the kids to produce crap and call it a movie...or a sacrament meeting...and they both belch junk and still make money doing it...joe wudda loved the movie business...budding desperate starlets and directors couches...if not for that unfortunate carthage stuff im sure there was a movie business coming...hopefully with scripts better wrritten than the bom...corse any dumbass cud write porn script...joe had quite a few dramas to draw from."..come see me tonight if emmas not around...let me clutch your bosoms miss lush body...wear your thong under your garments...mmmm heady stuff kids

One review says it really needed Will Smith to spark sales here at home. Liam Hemsworth ramped up sales internationally (he's Aussie,) both in Australia and China.

Second, movie goers are "apocalypse" fatigued, lol.

And third, audiences are getting savvier about sequels - as in more suspect about what to expect or not to expect from the producers.

"Fox’s decision not to screen “Resurgence” early to critics was a sign that the tentpole was going to be a dud. As a result, most multiplex-goers splurged on “Finding Dory” instead."
