It profited both FLDS and the nuts on the farm to look the other way. Kids are a commodity to them, not someone viewed as worthy of developing their own worth and life skills, but rather an extension of their parents.
The last couple of years have seen big changes for some of these kids, as they've left FLDS for the greater southern Utah valley and public schooling. They're in transition, ie, the families that have been expelled from the compounds of Jeffs. In a way they're the lucky ones, they just need time to sort it all out.
