I think this is significant, because Ireland is STILL a Catholic country, which means it was the youth who have changed.

YAYYYYYYYY!!! Good for the Irish, my relatives and ancestors! And a great big F you to the Catholic Bishops, those miserable old bigots. Yeah Ireland is Catholic, but not under the thumb of the hierarchy of the Church any more. I am so proud of this decision:-)

This is a good thing. Watch how backwards the United States will look when Ireland votes BY THE PEOPLE to allow gay marriage and it STANDS AS LAW.

Meanwhile, in the land of the free, we have Christian leaders praying for NINE members of the Supreme Court to "do the right thing" and vote down gay marriage for an ENTIRE COUNTRY.

Guess what happens when gay marriage is finally law in the United States... NOTHING. Gay people will be legally protected in certain important arenas and heterosexuals will be business as usual.

I'm a bit proud of my Irish ancestry today, even though it's half of my ancestry. I wish the US would do a similar thing in getting religion out of politics, but I'm afraid that might not happen.

Official results are in. 62% to 38%. The amendment only lost in one constituency out of 43.

The opening line in an email I just received from a friend in Ireland: "Ireland has come of age".

Indeed.

My parents were born in Ireland. My relatives' FB pages have been full of it today, and rightly so. A wonderful outcome.

Roscommon/South Leitrim was marginally the only no vote...ah well.

Didn't they only just make divorce legal?

This seems unprecedented.

A country that traditional can figure out there needs to be a line between religion and public policy.

Irish Times maps and percentages.

There was another referendum alongside the marriage amendment but it was largely unreported.

That map graphic is stunning. I guess no gay people want to be domiciled in Roscommon-South Leitrim... Wherever the fuck that is.

Dara O'Briain's Twitter feed kind of sums it up.

In 1982 I was traveling in Ireland, hitchhiking, and I got a ride from a member of the parliament. We discussed politics and the subject of cohabitation came up. I told him that it was almost required that a politician be married, instead of cohabitating, as this would offer grounds for attacking his moral character. He was appalled at this prudish attitude.
