Why wouldn't the LDS church like it?

1) It was the president saying it was unsustainable, not a change.

2) The mormon church has likely had the most people who felt same gender attraction as scouts and scoutmasters. A researcher five or so years ago found that mothers who had multiple sons were more likely to have sons that were gay. Since mormons have huge families and since all mormons are enrolled in scouts, and since until the past twenty years or so, gay men were likely to pass as hetro and marry, statistically is is highly likely that mormon troops have had gay scout leaders over many years. Even now, there may well be gay scout leaders who are called. The application or registration process does not ask any questions. Mormon scout leaders are chosen my leadership, who would have no reason to know unless they were told what sexual identity of any specific person is.

3) Official mormon position is that being gay is not wrong and does not preclude you from any level of participation in Church activities. Therefore, if it follows BSA policy as it is today to exclude gay leaders, then it violates its own policies that do not condone or support any adverse action because one is gay or not (only gay behavior).

When this was broadcast in Utah the news included the statement from LDS church as shown. However, the news cast indicated 'rumors' the LDS church was looking into establishing its own program and drop BSA.

How true? Who knows? However, this is a common way to put something out there to 'test the waters' ------ I think they will find out majority of Mos are ready for a new program after the annual 'support overpaid scouting professionals' drives also known as 'friends of scouting' which have gotten bad press in Utah in the past.

As I wrote on another thread TSCC already has another program in place and it is called Duty to God. There are manuals already being used for Deacons, Teachers and Priests. There is also a manual for parents and leaders.

This program was launched a decade ago and was pushed hard until local leaders reported it was too much work to do along side of scouting. So the program was reworked and cross referenced with Scouting so scouting activities were counted as Duty to God activities.

If the corporation drops scouting as the activity arm of the Aaronic Priesthood the are ready to kick off Duty to God the same day.

That's encouraging. Now let's move on and see if they'll allow atheist scouts and leaders. As far as I know, atheists are still an anathema to the BSA.
