It's a pathetic excuse for a "religion" but scary in what it turns it's true believers into and how many lives it damages in it's quest for financial dominance.

I was going to say Both, but this is a simple but precise explanation of why. Thank you. The same question could be asked about most of the people, scary or pathetic? Again, Both. But probably more pathetic than anything. I certainly was a pathetic excuse of a person with a brain when I was trying to be TBM.

You can drown in a wading pool if you don't know how to get out. Just because it looks shallow and sad from an outsider doesn't mean it isn't scary to someone struggling to escape.

That's an excellent analogy.

In times and places where the church has no power, it is pathetic.

In times and places where it has substantial power it is scary.

To outsiders who do not live in the Mormon corridor, the church is pathetic.

To non-Mormons, ex-Mormons, and disgruntled Mormons in the Mormon corridor, the church is scary.

It can definitely be both.

It's stupid. Really, really stupid. Ancient Jewish Native Americans? Unbelievable.

For me, it was neither. It was the life I lived for many years.

When I pantomimed cutting my own throat in the temple I never go over it completely.

That's the scary part. The pathetic part is that they think a veiled threat like that means they own you forever.

Did you ever have someone give you that sarcastic, knowing look that means they want to cut your throat? And that they hope they're the one who gets to do it when Jesus Christ rules the earth? That kind of thing depends on the cooperation of the victim. Knowing what I know now, I'd just laugh at them and leave.

It is scary because it is PURE EVIL.

More pathetic. Even by TSCC's numbers, there is only 15 million Mormons, and we know those are inflated numbers. I'd be worried about Muslims or Catholics, both of which have over a billion followers or Evangelical Protestants which have a lot as well, especially in the U.S.A. and actively do horrible things (Jihadism and Islamism in the case of Muslims, lying to Africans about condoms in the case of the Catholic Church and causing the AIDS epidemic to spread, and trying to have American children learn junk pseudoscience in school science classes in the case of Evangelical Protestants.) Compared to that, TSCC just looks pathetic.

It is both, but not equally so.

It is more frightening because of the money the cult has and the evil ways in which it can wield it - think Prop 8, lawsuits, choosing to beautify and build-up the center of the cult, Salt Lake City, so that everyone is made aware how awesome and successful the cult thinks it is. Plus, it gives so little of its money to truly help the downtrodden and poor, but keeps this hidden from the average Joe. And, don't forget, it will actually willingly take and advertise that it took, a gold filling for tithing payment from a poor, disadvantaged member. How low can you get?

The cult is pathetic because it does not care how much it lies or hurts or even kills others to get what it wants, which is money, prestige, and power, both among the masses and in the political arena.

It's DANGEROUS and it leads to divorce, alienation from family & friends, mental cruelty, pyschological disorders and so many more fun problems which are pathetic.
