BYU acceptance letters

I have seen a few acceptance letters posted on FB in the past day. I also have heard of several rejections too. My nephew with a 4.0gpa, perfect attendance for all 4 yrs of seminary, will be returning from his mission in August, Dad's in the bishopric, grandfather was a stake pres, both parents are alum of BYU and yes you guessed it, rejected. His sister, accepted. I can't understand the reasoning? Not a big deal to me, but there are obviously other criteria? Any theories or inside scoops?

My theory: he's too smart and they know it. They know he'll leave once he studies, so minimizing damage to other testimonies. Hahaha.
