I just thought this was another "B" war film -- but it turned out to be a Mormon war movie. American soldiers trapped behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Bulge team up with a downed British pilot and try to make it out of enemy territory. Not too bad except for the lead character reading the "Book Of Mormon" whilst freezing in the snow in WWII Belgium and meeting a convert from his mission in Germany -- ha

I thought it was a great movie with unusually high production values for an Indy film.

The Mormonism was so understated that almost all the non-Mormons outside of Utah who watched the film probably didn't notice that the movie was about a Mormon. I do not think the movie ever used the word "Mormon" or called the book "The Book of Mormon." Viewers were likely to just think that this one soldier was some kind of devout Christian fundamentalist.

I believe this movie was based (very loosely) on actual events.
It had strong characterization and tight direction. Yes, it was made by mormons, but I have to hand it to the people that worked damned hard to make a film that good especially with an extremely low budget. It had the mormon-ness that would make it a draw for LDS audiences, but critics in general did like the movie.

However, the series of films following "Saints and Soldiers": meh.

The non bible-quoted portions of the BoM (Alma, Helaman and Mormon) mainly consists of nothing but wars. Joseph Smith loved war and was the proud commander of the Nauvoo Legion.
