No. He's too smart for that. Why give up being a few heartbeats from US president to being imprisoned in the 12?

Though in the past they did have Apostles in the US senate.

He could do both.

Apparently Sen. Hatch has announced his intention to retire from the Senate. The NYTimes seems to be giddy at the thought of anti-Trump Republican, Willard Romney, replacing him.

For me, another in the long line of reasons to shout "Wheeeeee!"

He'll have free time to spend drooling on the dais now that he's done in the Senate.

You sparked a thought... Can hatches be unbattened, or battened up?

Antonyms for "batten down" would be loosen, untie, unfasten or secure. "Secure" would be more naval. The "batten up" a hatch would mean, I suppose, to leave or lay open.

Read here. Looks like he has been released from his current calling.

apostle? Me thinks not. He does not have enough wealth to prove worthy for such a high spot.

Maybe it's the opposite! Maybe he access to enough F U money so that the thought of breaching a NDA isn't fearsome enough to satisfy the others that he wouldn't go rogue on them...

No 4 million is not enough. I worked for a Seventy who has over 1 billion in personal wealth and will always be a 70. I also know another wealthy mo in 900 million range but won't be considered either.

Residency is easy to achieve. You just need to have a place to live there (the Mittster does) and claim that you do live there.

Hatch talked about other opportunities for public service.

Despite his excessive age, Hatch has been kissing up BIG TIME to President Trump to fulfill one long-held obsession: A Seat On The Supreme Court!

I had not thought of that but yes, Hatch has for decades wanted a seat on the Supreme Court. The decision to quit the senate would explain his transformation from a Trump critic, standing on principle, to a Trump sycophant, looking for a new job.

You make a great point.

Just heard that Mittens altered his twitter account as soon as the Hatchling made his retirement official.

Senator Mitt will be Rump's worst nightmare.

But who knows, by then the president may have substantially bigger worries.

Mittins may be a RINO but he will be an 'elected Republican' from Utah.

It is amazing how even RINOs come in line on many legislative issues! Because they want to be reelected!

Look at the Tax bill and the lack of a Dreamer bill!

I think you are confusing Hatch, who came around on the tax bill, with Romney, who is not in office and has no vote.

Now, he's put in almost DOUBLE that amount of time...

What is stunning is whorrin Orrin's dismally low numbers in a state that once worshipped him.

He was facing the fight of his life just to keep that seat.

He could be in the first presidency without being an apostle. Only requirement is to be a high priest.

So with Hatch doing secular, state work for Utah and the country...for 40+ yrs...and then NOT having a church calling...still qualifies him for high church leadership???

I bet this will rub more than 1 Mormon, the wrong way

I am under 70 and have been retired for over 5 years. I have doctor and other professional friends that continue to work but I don't really understand why.

With the aches and pains starting, I would be hard pressed to want either more power or more money!!!!

I could buy the 'power' thing possibly, but think he is definitely crazy for working past 70! Why?? What has he accomplished?? What could he possibly accomplish that would give him a rush?

I'm convinced, as noted above, that Hatch is angling for a seat on the supreme court.

The reason he chose to stay on the judiciary committee for decades was to understand the courts and to form relationships with GOP leaders who would make the personnel decisions. His aides were open about his ambition in that regard in the 1980s and onward.

Hatch's recent behavior fits that pattern. He initially condemned Trump's general idiocy and refused to help with certain policy initiatives. Then (inferring here) he realized that his support ratings were not impregnably high and decided to seek one of the several justice positions that will presumably open up over the next year or two.

What does one do to seek a nomination? Help the president, of course. So he supported the appalling tax legislation and then gave an obsequious speech about how Trump will go down in history as a great president.

An observer might well suffer whiplash watching that sudden and complete reversal. But Anon For This resolved the paradox: Hatch went from wanting to win senatorial re-election to "applying" for a supreme court nomination. A changed view of self-interest explains the switch.

So I don't believe Hatch wants to be an apostle. At least not while the supreme court is in play.

Apostles don't hatch, they just sit there like a knot on a log.
