I'm story #18 on main board, I wrote that back in 1995. Just thought the community might find my essay of some interest, I tend to think Mormons should be Mormons and ex-Mormons should be something else entirely.....

Good essay. I still don't understand why high (or perhaps medium) commitment counts as utility rather than cost, but it could explain quite a bit. I think it's mostly just signaling, a way to exclude outsiders from a system of mutual benefit.

I'm looking forward to finding out what Iannacone has to say about this. I happened to read Rodney Stark's book last year, and I thought his concept of rationality could have been defined more carefully. Paul Rubin had a good chapter on religion in his own book, and I picked up some ideas about both signaling and "handicap competition." He's my favorite so far.
