For one thing, it gives you the ability to edit your posts if you find you've made a mistake, or think of something to add.
Also, I've never posted without logging in first, so if someone ever tried to post in my name, without being logged in, people could know that it wasn't actually me.
Sometimes trolls have pulled that sort of stunt.
But you don't have to register, if you don't want to. It's up to you.
Happened to me several times before I registered. Someone claimed to be me when I was out of town. They wrote mean hateful things and blamed them on me.
What finally motivated me to register is that another board member started to use a very similar name. But once I registered, I wondered what took me so long. If you post here regularly, I would recommend registering. It makes your experience on the board so much nicer.

Okay, most of you don't enjoy needling and gobsmacking trolls the way I do, but honest, it's a wonderful catharsis for relieving road rage.
