Which is worse: stealing ideas, or thinking Cleon Skousen's ideas are worth stealing?

I still remember when SLC Mayor J. Bracken Lee fired Police Chief "W. Cleon's" sorry ass.

When asked why he did it, Mayor Lee said Skousen "was too busy fighting sin rather than fighting crime".

Sounds like he'd have done better in the Spanish Inquisition or something.

Which is a ridiculous joke, of course. You all be sure to read the thread defending "BYU's academic excellence" and recall WC spent decades teaching religion there.

And among my family heirlooms is a signed note from J. Bracken Lee to my grandfather, thanking him for a Tribune letter my gf wrote defending the Skousen firing.

The man accused the FDR administration of giving uranium to the Soviets. He could not believe that the Soviets were capable of developing the bomb on their own, and ignorant of the Russian uranium mines.

He called those who criticised the LDS Church over racism "Communists". How strange Ben Carson would support such a racist man.

Stealing words (not ideas) and calling them your own is disgusting.
Stealing Skousen's words and calling them your own is disgusting *and* stupid. That makes it "worse." :)

Just researched Cleon Skousen and found he was born in Raymond, Ab....go figure...a hotbed of Mormon lunacy.

No "accusations" here -- the deal is done, he was caught.
And it is stealing. Even in the case of the one author who gave permission to quote him, because that permission came with the caveat of attribution, which Carson didn't give.

When you use someone else's words, you use quotes and name the source. If you don't, you're stealing and being dishonest. Yes, it's that simple.

From another website account, citing BuzzFeed's big-picture findings:

"After calling attention to passages from Sen. Rand Paul’s 2013 book, 'Government Bullies,' that were lifted word-for-word from a Heritage Foundation study, BuzzFeed is at it again. This time, the site is highlighting portions of potential 2016 Republican presidential Dr. Ben Carson’s 2012 book, 'America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great.'

"One source left un-cited by Carson was a website called socialismsucks.net, which apparently went online in 2002, but is currently down. But a cached page on Archive.org on the history of socialism, contains a multi-paragraph passage, including the section below, that is repeated verbatim in Carson’s book:

"'Anytime you give to government the responsibility and authority to provide government-made jobs, old-age financial security, “free” health care, and “free” education and indoctrination of children, it will control the lives of the people who live under its jurisdiction, and individual liberty and freedom of choice are sacrificed.'

"BuzzFeed also found passages lifted from 'The Five Thousand Year Leap' by W. Cleon Skousen, a Liberty Institute press release from 2011, a CBS News article from 2010 and more.

“'If it is determined that additional citations or attribution are required, the appropriate revisions will be made in subsequent printings,' spokesperson for Carson, Sealey Yates said in a statement to BuzzFeed. 'Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.'

"Read the full report with extensive examples at buzzfeed.com."
