A giant nude statue in California is stirring controversy

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/a-giant-nude-statue-in-california-is-stirring-controversy/ar-AAjdBcs?li=BBnb7Kz

Well at least it's not in Utah or the morg corridor!

It is beautiful.
I cringe at the people commenting, "I don't want kids to see this!"

They should be more upset about how women and children are trafficked and abused in the USA, especially in their area.

People get all upset over nudity but seemingly could care less over violence to women and children, or violence to minorities, or poverty and homelessness... the list goes on.

What does that say about this culture? What does it say about
peoples priorities? It says we are fucked up.

This. It says we're totally fucked up in the US.

It totally amazes me that in the US TV and cinema can show unrelenting, brutal sadism and nobody bats an eyelid. Then when (for example) there is a very brief glimpse of someone's nipple, the whole country goes bezerk.

Denver international is the most fucked up airport in the world. Or weirdest. Read about it.

I think the statue is great. I'm sure Tom DeLay would disagree.

You know what a beautiful statue like that needs? :-)

No Boner.... tell us .... what does it need? ;)

(Gulp...) lots of love, some spotlights, beautiful music playing in the background, a butterfly garden, dog park, lambs frisking in the sweet grass...

Liar, liar pants on fire!! That's not what you were going to say.
Probably has something to do with a well developed male statue nearby to keep her company, or something like it

Even a Boner knows when he's gotten in over his head!

Fantastic statue! Next time I am driving that way, I will be sure to go see it.

I love good art in cities, we could use more of it!

The Artist's story is even more beautiful than the sculpture.

http://www.sfgate.com/art/article/Naked-Truth-towers-over-East-Bay-campus-9973136.php

“People sexualize each other. It happens all the time,” said Cochrane, 53. “So I do sculptures of nude women who are just expressing themselves normally.”
The inspiration for “Truth Is Beauty” was a childhood friend of Cochrane’s from Berkeley who was raped when she was 9. The girl had been playing with Cochrane and left to go home, but before she could get there she was snatched from the street and assaulted.
“My mother told me in gory detail what happened,” Cochrane said. “I learned about sex and rape at the same time.”
The sexual assault was never talked about again and the rapist was never caught. Six months ago, Cochrane tracked down the victim of the attack, and they talked it through for the first time.
“What Marco is trying to do is make the the world see past the physicality to the person,” said Cochrane’s creative partner, Julia Whitelaw, 49. “This is very good timing with the national spotlight on the treatment of women. Covering up a woman doesn’t work. That’s not the solution.”
The solution is inscribed in 10 languages at the base of the sculpture. “What Would the World Be Like if Women Were Safe?”

How timely. I just saw this statue today after parking at the San Leandro Bart station. I thought it was very cool. I saw it at night and was lit up in is this mystical purple color.

There is nothing offensive about this statue. I was struck by how athletic the woman looked and my sister said it made her think of ballet.

The David (and now the replica) has stood in front of the city hall in Florence for hundreds of years.

Nashville has struggled for years to come to terms with the plethora of nakee peoples depicted in the sculpture that graces the traffic circle just off Music Row. But it's an equal opportunity offender with full frontal on both the men and women depicted.

Yeah. Because pasties on a string and a thong are required attire for proper ladies, especially when there's lots of sand and water.

Geeze. Wasn't the term "T&A" coined for CA?

Same artist has another rendition of similar statuette sculpture installed at MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas, NV.

That one is called "Bliss Dance." The model appears to be the same one as used for the San Leandro sculpture.

She has a name: Bay area dancer and singer Deja Solis.

:))

Can't really see it from the front, but if it's like the old roman statues it's more of an art form. It's just out of place in an area like that. It should be in a park or garden.

It's odd. Why are we so very afraid of nudity? Why are we afraid of ourselves?

With all the controversy over this statue, one would think it was in Utah.
