This is a very interesting article about a problem that is not as often seen in the rest of the developed world. It also raises some very deep and troubling questions about the role of religious beliefs in U.S. society.

In New York there is no religious exemption for parents overriding medical attention to minors.

Under the doctrine of 'parens patriae' the state will step in and so will doctors and hospitals where parents refuse life saving treatment for their child.

I'm surprised there are loopholes in other states that would allow the parents wishes for no medical intervention trump the needs of the child.

It seems surreal in this day and age with all the life saving technology why a parent would refuse such if it meant saving their own child?
