I wanted to reply, but the topic was closed.

I was a child in the '80s when the Soviet threat seemed pretty real. My mom saved around 30 gallon sized Clorox Bleach bottles, charged my brother and I with filling them with water and a dose of chlorine. Her basement was stocked with cracked wheat, rows upon rows of home-canned goods, and buckets of dried pinto beans. I used to have nightmares about the world ending and natural disasters most nights because of this paranoia.

She knows how to use the wheat and bake it into delicious homemade bread, I love beans and home-canned goods, but the Clorox bottles are pretty odd. There is a creek running in front of the house and I asked why we just couldn't purify that water instead of wasting space with the recycled bleach bottles.
