As I look through the basement filled with several old items that hav log since done their job, I find several books on Mormonism and Christianity.

'The Truth About "The God Makers"' by Gilbert W. Scharffs

'The State of Deseret' by Dale L. Morgan

'D&C: Our Modern Scripture' by Richard O. Cowan

'The Authors of Genesis' by Dr. Irving H. Cohen

'The Savior's Prophecies' by Richard D. Draper

'A Marvelous Work and a Wonder' by LeGrand Richards

'The Mormon Experience' by Leonard J. Arrington and Davis Bitton

'Mormon Doctrine' by Bruce R. McConkie

'The Prophet Joseph: Essays on the Life and Mission of Joseph Smith' edited by Larry C. Porter and Susan Easton Black

'A Plain English Reference to the Book of Mormon' by Timothy B. Wilson

'Adam & Eve' by A. Biernat Topol

'Timely Truths from the Book of Mormon' by Allan K. Burgess

'101 Creative Dates for Latter-Day Saints' by Linsey Shumway (Important Note: That is my aunt.)

'An Approach to the Book of Mormon' by Hugh Nibley

'The Mormon Murderers' by Steven Naifeh & Gregory White Smith

'The Birth That we Call Death' by Paul H. Dunn and Richard M. Eyre

'Look at Your World' by Paul H. Dunn/Maurine Ward

There are ten other books that I don't have the time to list right now. As a freshmen taking Honors in Language Arts, I'm wondering which books people might have read and which ones might be interesting to read. Or perhaps, what sounds interesting and I should find excerpts from.

Is '101 Creative Dates for Latter-Day Saints' in hardback or paper?

And....is your father all right? What brings you to his books? Is there a story here? And do you want to go out on a scavenger hunt?

Paperback.

And to your question, they're old books that don't have space on our living room bookshelf. My father is fine, only in his late thirties.

And yes, a scavenger hunt would be fun.

How old does that make you?

Might I add now that I have all the "teachings of the prophets" books.

Well I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to read them... that, or they'll make lovely doorstops.

Don't let anyone from the ward take them. Rumor has it there's a purge of some sort going on.

My father's doorstop quality tomes included the now discredited and disavowed works of such Mormon luminaries as Cleon Skousen, Hugh Nibley and Bruce McConkie.

Everyone!

Hang on to your old books. They will be worth a fortune. You can sell them back to the church for a refund of a year's tithing.

Sound fair?

I just finished reading The Mormon Murders (and the other one about the Hofmann debacle), having read them in the late 80s when they came out.

I was still masquerading as TBM in those days, and I can't imagine why the things I read about GBH, and Oaks (and Pinnock? Who the hell was he?) didn't make me run for the hills then.

Truly evil men.

Another ex-shirttail relative.

My ex is related to many current and past GA's. I attended what was probably the very last Benson family reunion with ETB and Flora together, organized and hosted by Steve Benson's father, Mark.

You'd think that if I had guts enough to divorce my ex, I could further the process and totally divorce TSCC.

Not so easy, that one.

*sigh*

Is your dad's Mormon Doctrine 1st or 2nd edition?

1st ed – published 1958. Names the Catholic Church as "Whore of Babylon." Article on "Negroes" gives long explanation on non-valiant behavior in pre-existence. Other crazy stuff in it, got Bruce in trouble. This edition is relatively hard to find as it has been mostly purged. I have personally seen it only one time. Hang onto it if you can.

2nd ed – published 1966. Catholic reference removed. My 1979 copy's article on "Negroes" talks about 1978 giving p-hood to blacks. (Don't know about 1966-1977 printings.) Most copies still around are this version.

Anything by Paul Dunn is pure s***.

I inherited a 1958 Mormon Doctrine, but it's a fourth printing, so it's not a collectible.Lots of other classics as well. Did you know Talmage used to eat hashish and kill cats?
